About the role

POSITION TITLE: Software Engineering Intern

LOCATION: Cambridge, MA

This position sits in and reports to our global HQ in Cambridge, MA. There is no remote option, and we have a hybrid work schedule. Local candidates only.

When: May 28 - August 23, 2024

Who we are:

TriNetX was founded on the idea that incorporating real-world data results in better clinical trial design, improves the site selection and patient recruitment process and generates real-world evidence (RWE) to advance the collective understanding of human health. TriNetX collaborates with the majority of industry leaders, including 13 of the top 15 pharmaceutical companies, and is powered by an impressive network of 150 healthcare organizations across 25 countries.

As a result of its reach and rapidly expanding network, TriNetX has become the market leader in protocol design, feasibility, and site selection. Researchers have leveraged the TriNetX network to analyze over 39,000 protocols, presented over 10,000 clinical trial opportunities to its healthcare members, and reduced site identification time in clinical trials by 50%.

Currently, TriNetX healthcare organization members contribute access to a patient population of 400 million, representing over 40 billion clinical observations. TriNetX has a worldwide presence, with our global headquarters located in Cambridge, Massachusetts and EU offices in Ghent, Belgium; Freiburg, Germany; and Basel, Switzerland – as well as offices in London, Madrid, Melbourne, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Tokyo, and Healdsburg, California. As a result, TriNetX is one of the fastest-growing, privately held companies in the life sciences industry.

What challenges we work on:

TriNetX is the global health research network that optimizes clinical research and enables discoveries through the creation of real-world evidence. TriNetX combines real-time access to longitudinal clinical data with state-of-the-art analytics to answer complex research questions at the speed of thought.  Each member of our community shares in the consolidated value of our global, federated health research network that connects clinical researchers to the patient populations that they are attempting to study.

Who we are looking for:

Our customer base and network are growing rapidly and we are expanding our Engineering team.  We are looking for extremely talented, energetic, and motivated interns to join us on our journey.  We are a small group, and you will have a big impact on the success of our product and company.

We have seen success with past interns and are excited to see what ideas you can bring to the table to improve our platform. You can expect to primarily focus on a project of your choosing but also learn modern software engineering techniques by engaging in typical engineer duties. To ensure a productive internship experience, we will work with you to ideate your project and bring it to life. Other engineers, designers, and product managers, thanks to the company’s community-based culture, will be ready to lend you a hand through roadblocks and difficulties – we’ve all been there.

Though you will be primarily focused on your project, we expect certain standards of software development. You will be responsible for overall design and code quality. Additionally, you will ensure your solutions are secure, scalable, testable, and maintainable and are aligned with other areas of the system. Though you might not be familiar with these concepts in practice, we will be there to guide and support you through the process. We are here to foster a learning experience that is productive for you as well as the company.

The internship will cumulate with a company-wide internship presentation, where you will show off the work you’ve done and your experience.

Our Engineering Environment

We are building our system with a variety of technologies including React, Dropwizard, Spring Boot, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, Redis, Mongo, PostgreSQL, and Oracle all running on AWS.  We're writing code in JavaScript, Java, Rust, Go, Python, R, and SQL.  We are currently researching and implementing the best technologies to enable future analytics development.  We operate in an agile environment where we believe in collaboration, code/design reviews, and lots of automated tests.

What you will be doing:

  • Collaborate with our team, presenting your concepts and ideas to the rest of the group
  • Ensure that your solutions are secure, manageable, scalable, and testable
  • Document your designs
  • Communicate status and track work activities via Agile development tools and practices
  • Work on your determined internship project
