JOB TITLE: FY 24-25 PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM PARAPROFESSIONAL SUBSTITUTE

STATUS: Part-Time, Flexible schedule

REPORTS TO: Preschool Site Supervisor

Organization Overview

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.

Primary Responsibilities 

• Assist classroom Teacher as directed
• Monitor & Supervise students indoors and outdoors
• Conduct student observations as needed
• Support during student arrival and dismissal
• Support during breakfast and lunch
• Support education program through-out the school day
• Attend educational field trips as needed
• Implement classroom procedures
• Implement state wide safety policies (mask must be worn on campus, weekly covid testing if not vaccinated, and classroom cleaning procedures)
• Participate in all school emergency and safety plans
• Support all students in all learning activities

Minimum Qualifications 

• High School Diploma or GED
• 48 semester college units/60 quarter college units OR pass a pre-employment test with a passing score of 70% or better. 
• Proficient in reading, writing, and math
• Preferably, enrolled in an accredited college 

Desirable Skills/Qualifications 

• Bilingual: English/Spanish
• Child Development Units
• CPR/First Aid Certified
• Degree in Education or related field
• Experience working in a primary classroom setting
• Experience with small group presentations
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
• Experience and commitment to working collaboratively with staff, parents, and community

Compensation and Benefits 

• $19.00/hr
• Sick Time Accrual

Additional Information

Upon receiving an offer of employment: 

• Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ) 
• Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
• Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
