Overview

The Staff Manufacturing Automation Engineer is responsible for the research, planning, design and integration of industrial automation, tooling, fixturing, control systems, and other equipment into manufacturing. This technical expert utilizes engineering best practices to architect, design, develop, and implement automation, tooling, fixtures, equipment, and control systems that are accurate, repeatable, and reliable while also meeting all requirements and safety regulations.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Researches, architects, designs and integrates industrial automation, tooling, fixturing, and control systems that are used to machine, assemble, handle, or process parts or assemblies within a complex vertically integrated manufacturing environment.
  • Specifies, configures, engineers, and documents all fixtures, equipment, and automation using CAD software, conforming to industry standards, best practices, and all appropriate safety regulations.
  • Specifies, configures, and programs control hardware/software (e.g., PLCs, LabVIEW, sensors, related automation technology) with an emphasis on accuracy, repeatability, reliability, and real-time data collection.
  • Follows validation procedures for a regulated environment (e.g., ISO, FDA, UL) and documents results.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs manufacturing automation, control systems, fixturing, and tooling.
  • Architects, develops and implements test and/or assembly fixtures concurrently alongside Manufacturing Engineering and Test & Calibration teams to define test requirements and ensure Design for Test (DfT) best practices are implemented to achieve project deliverables.
  • Provides input and recommendations for design and process improvements to Product and Manufacturing Engineering teams based on technical knowledge, experience, and data-collection trends.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills with a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment while following established procedures.
  • Expertise in Mechanical Engineering/Industrial Automation/Control Systems including the ability to create drawings, specifications, schematics, and other technical documentation.
  • Expertise with various engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical, software, pneumatic, fluids) and their applications in a production-level environment.
  • Expertise with various manufacturing processes, including machining, fabrication, sheet metal processing, finishing, mechanical assembly, pneumatics, and electrical assembly.
  • Proficient with control system technology, with a preference for those with the ability to configure and program PLCs, LabVIEW, QT, Python, Linux, and/or other systems.
  • Proficient with communication protocols such as CAN Bus, Ethernet, USB, SPI, and I2C interfaces preferred.
  • Demonstrated Project Management skills leading projects that are technical in nature.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of GD&T and ASME drafting standards.
  • Understanding of test process and systems validation standards and best practices in a regulated environment preferred.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects that are technical in nature.
  • Ability to follow, and be a model of, safety guidelines.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in mechanical, manufacturing, or related engineering discipline, and a minimum of 8 years of experience working as an engineer or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Experience working with CAD design (Inventor) tools preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise maneuver up to 35 pounds with or without assistance on a routine basis. Must have manual hand dexterity to grasp, operate tools and equipment repetitively. Able to walk, stand, sit, bend, reach, and occasionally kneel, climb steps, and twist throughout an entire shift. Some areas may be exposed to chemicals, noise, vibration and /or dust, and require the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); such as, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, foot protection, etc.
