The Opportunity
Evergreen is Liberty Mutual’s multi-year, business-led and technology-enabled flagship transformation of our Workers’ Compensation line. Reporting to the Senior Director of Technology (overall tech lead for Evergreen), you will become the third Technical Engineering Manager, leading one of three execution tracks (with 3-5 Agile teams and 10-15 engineers). Although you won’t be writing production code daily, your deep engineering background lets you guide architecture, mentor developers, and ensure delivery excellence for a platform that processes billions in annual claims payments.
Peer set & governance• Peers: two additional Engineering Managers, multiple Solution Architects, and the Release Train Engineer (RTE).• Architectural alignment via GRS and program Architecture Review Board (ARB) to keep the teams delivering toward the Evergreen North-Star architecture.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Product Delivery• Lead your track to design, build, and launch the green-field Workers Compensation claims ecosystem—core and non-core capabilities—towards the North-Star architecture.• Define, track, and communicate product & platform KPIs (e.g., claims cycle time, NPS, MTTR, cloud spend) with Product Owners to guarantee that every release delivers measurable customer and business value.• Provide thought leadership in resilience, security, scalability, operational excellence, and cost optimization; continuously scout emerging technologies, run lean POCs, and shepherd viable solutions through ARB approval.• Act as financial steward—forecast, track, and optimize both build and run costs (FinOps) to maximize ROI and minimize total cost of ownership over the platform’s life-cycle.
People & Culture• Own the full talent lifecycle—recruiting, onboarding, vendor integration, quarterly performance reviews, rotations, and timely coaching—to create an inclusive, high-trust environment where engineers can do the best work of their careers.• Mentor and coach engineers on technical skills, software craftsmanship, and soft-skill growth; raise the bar for engineering excellence and psychological safety.• Foster a culture of continuous learning, experimentation, and innovation; celebrate smart risk-taking and rapid feedback loops.
Execution & Collaboration• Partner daily with Product Owners, Solution Architects, Scrum Masters, and the RTE to maintain program health, manage inter-pod dependencies, remove impediments, and hit program milestones.• Engage with on-shore and off-shore vendor partners to ensure consistent engineering standards, knowledge transfer, and shared culture.• Initiate and foster collaborative relationships across business, operations, and technology leadership to drive the Evergreen roadmap from idea through production support.
