About the role

Change.org is searching for a Senior Media Campaigner to bring media expertise to the US team, help the team learn best practices for communicating with journalists and landing hits, and directly drive coverage of the biggest and highest impact campaigns on Change.org in the US.

Our users win campaigns for change once every hour. 

From mobilizing over 5 million people to stop the Willow Project oil pipeline, to large-scale campaigns for the people of Iran and against the war in Ukraine, and calling for racial justice in the U.S., many movements were born on Change.org.  As a Senior Media Campaigner, you will:

  • Use media expertise to drive brand awareness and affinity for Change.org in the US. 
  • Directly contribute to rigorous goals around media hits and impressions by supporting the highest potential campaigns in the US market. 
  • Support the US team to upskill in communications work, including best practices for pitching, building relationships with journalists, etc. 
  • Conduct media training for Change.org petition starters  

Core competencies needed to be successful in the role:

  • Strong media skills, including experience working with and pitching to journalists, developing media strategies to gain attention of decision makers and the public, and using media to build brand affinity. 
  • Proven track record of landing high profile media hits, including broadcast and top-tier digital and print publications. 
  • Existing relationships with journalists in the tech, social impact and civic space. 
  • Previous experience working on publicized political or social justice campaigns.
  • A good understanding of the US news landscape, particularly including coverage of social justice, economic, political and environmental issues.
  • Willingness to work across difference, including providing support to policy-compliant campaigns that you may not agree with but align with Change.org’s commitment to being an open platform.
  • Experience managing a team, mentoring team members or supporting peers to improve their skills pitching media.  
  • You have a can-do, positive attitude, are self-motivated, keen to learn, and willing to take risks, to fail, and to adapt.
  • You are low-ego, with a strong sense of fun and give-and-take.  You're driven by results, and you're always curious about how to improve your work.

Target experience:

  • You have 4-6 years of experience in a media-related field, with a proven track record of driving top tier coverage.
  • You have some informal or formal experience with grassroots campaigning or advocacy. You have causes that matter to you. 
  • Helpful but not required: some familiarity with US government affairs.

We anticipate moving quickly and our evaluation process is as follows:

  1. 30 min screen with a Recruiter
  2. 2 hour take home task
  3. 45 min video interview with Deputy Campaigns Director, US
  4. 60 min with our Regional Director, NA and Senior Director, US

Important:

  • This is a full-time role based in the US, with a strong preference for someone in the East Coast time zone. Currently, we are mostly working remotely, with flexibility to work several days per week in a coworking space for staff who have specific requirements.
  • Change.org is a global company, and salaries are adjusted for cost of labor in each city. For example, the annual salary for a Senior Media Campaigner is $119,000 USD in San Francisco or New York City, $113,000 USD in Boston or Seattle and $101,000 USD in Atlanta or Miami.
