Job Description

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs and directs others in performing skilled installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment used in communications, lighting, and power including but not limited to high voltage switch gear, transformers, transmission lines for low voltage distribution, secondary sub-panels, alarm and signal circuits, electrical power plant control systems, elevators, and standby generators according to specifications in the National and State Electrical Codes and National Electrical Safety Code. An employee in this class trains and directs the work of licensed electricians, laborers, and maintenance employees and performs related work as required.
This position is considered essential during natural and man-made disasters, and during inclement weather. Employee will report for duty as directed by their supervisor and is subject to recall during these types of events.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS
The specific tasks which are listed for the principal responsibilities are among those which are the most common or frequent. Schedules, distributes, balances and guides the work activities of assigned staff in accordance with established workflow/assignment requirements to assist supervisory staff in the timely accomplishment of assigned workload.

  • Coordinating electrical projects with other skilled crafts such as plumbers, carpenters, painters by modifying work plans to improve efficiency and by recommending additional employees for the project to ensure timely completion.

Monitors and reports on the work activities of licensed electricians, less skilled laborers, and maintenance employees to ensure the timely completion of electrical projects by applying for necessary permits.

  • Determine the most efficient work procedures and techniques.

  • Instructing others and ensuring use of appropriate procedures and equipment and compliance with safety standards.

  • Inspecting the quality of work performed by others.

  • Filing requests by the Board of Electricity and/or local subdivision.

  • Recording hours worked and materials and equipment used.

Review plans, blueprints, and specifications. Prepare sketches, plans, and material lists for electrical projects to understand the scope of the project and to recommend changes.

  • Reading the plans, blueprints, and specifications.

  • Discuss them with the supervisor by researching the plans and specifications of previously completed electrical projects.

  • Defining the detailed tasks of the project and laying out the work.

Estimates costs for time, labor, and materials to ensure that the supervisor can prioritize, budget, and schedule electrical projects by determining the type and amount of supplies necessary to complete the project according to codes.

Installs, adds to, alters, repairs, and maintains electrical wiring systems and fixtures such as boxes, conduit, outlets, switch panels, incandescent and fluorescent light fixtures, power plant controls, elevators, etc. in campus buildings to ensure that all systems are operational according to State Electrical Code and the Underwriter’s rules for electrical installations.

  • Selecting the necessary supplies and equipment to complete the project most efficiently and in compliance with codes.
