About the opportunity
The Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join its dynamic team. This appointment is funded by the Australian Research Council through its support of the Discovery Project “Mapping the Frontiers of Private Property in Australia” (DP240100395).
This position will support a multidisciplinary team from the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney. The project aims to document and represent the first generation of land ownership in New South Wales, drawing on historical research, GIS techniques, and the digital humanities to understand the pace and pattern through which private property was granted and acquired in the colony. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting historical research into property history in NSW, primarily consulting digital and physical archives, as well as supporting the project team, and contributing to the project’s publication program. The successful candidate will work closely with Prof. Andrew Leach, Assoc. Prof. Dallas Rogers, and Dr Laurence Troy (USyd ADP), Assoc. Prof. Amelia Thorpe (UNSW Law), and Dr Jasper Ludewig (UTS Architecture).
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- undertake research into historical land records in New South Wales
- work collaboratively with the project team to collate, represent and interpret these records and the property dispositions they describe
- assist in the administration of the project, including reporting, project management, and communications
- undertake travel should it be required
- contribute to the presentation and publication of research findings, provisional and resolved
- maintain communications with the working group and other relevant stakeholders, inform of research progress and prepare publications, project briefs, progress reports, and media outputs.
About you
- a PhD degree in a history discipline, completed in the past 3 years
- a track record of conducting independent research resulting in individual or collaborative publications of high quality in modes appropriate to the field of research (which may include traditional academic publications as well as works oriented to a broader public or clientele)
- experience of teaching and research in an academic setting
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- excellent organisational and project management skills
- ability to build relationships within and beyond the University
- demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within and outside the University in a team to meet agreed deadlines and achieve project goals
- experience in preparing and editing reports and/or publications, and experience in collaborative authorship
- demonstrated understanding of WHS responsibilities and actively ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others at work in accordance with your delegated authority, as described in the University’s WHS Policy and Procedures and role responsibilities
