About the role

IAT Insurance Group has an immediate opening for a Senior Underwriter within the Commercial Truck Team to support our non-fleet wholesale segment.


The ideal candidate will have at least five years’ risk assessment experience related to multi-line underwriting, including commercial auto and/or large truck. The title of the role offered will reflect the selected candidate's experience and knowledge. We will consider candidates with significantly more or less experience.

This role will work a hybrid schedule out of an IAT office in Scottsdale, AZ, Naperville, IL, or Houston, TX. Other IAT office locations will be considered. The hybrid schedule reflects our values (thinking and acting like an owner, collaboration, and teamwork) as it requires working from the office with colleagues and other disciplines Monday through Wednesday, with the option of working remotely on Thursday and Friday. Occasional travel is required.  

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, assess, price, and recommend handling of accounts beyond the agent’s granted authority and, if necessary, present the account in collaboration to obtain the authority to approve that specific account.
  • Manage, evaluate, analyze. and assess the General Agents’ (GA) book of new and renewal business, making recommendations as to pricing, acceptability, coverage considerations, cancellations, non-renewals, etc., to maximize profitability. This involves the interpretation, trending, and development of loss information from prior carriers, analysis of financial information and governmental and industry reports prepared specifically for each account.
  • Travel, as needed to work with the individuals within the GA’s offices to evaluate workflow, perform underwriting audits of file maintenance and acceptability and assure the overall profitability of each GA. Correspond with the general agent in a manner that serves to maintain positive agency relations and elevate issues as necessary to underwriting manager.
  • Prepare and present educational programs, as needed, or as requested by management. This involves group presentation, public speaking and cogent presentation of information covered.
  • Provides outstanding customer service.
  • Effectively communicates with assigned agents the appropriate level of information to ensure understanding of company direction. 
  • Perform other tasks as needed.

Qualifications:
Must Have:

  • Bachelors’ degree and at least five years of experience in commercial Insurance.
  • Equivalent is defined as nine years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in managing agents in a given territory. 
  • Must possess the ability to creatively utilize coverage features, deductibles, or reinsurance on individual risks to achieve company objectives.
  • Requires strong math aptitude, excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills.
  • Must possess knowledge of various computer programs, internet-based programs, PC literate and working with spreadsheets.
  • To qualify, applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require VISA sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment purposes.

Preferred to Have:

  • Knowledge of the transportation/trucking insurance Industry.
  • CPCU, ARM, or AU industry designations.
  • INS21, 22, and 23 or equivalent.
