Are you passionate about research studies and analyses? Leidos Health and Civil is seeking a Radiofrequency Health Effects Research Scientist I to work with the Directed Energy (DE) Health Effects Directorate at the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio TX.  NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. The Directed Energy Department develops diagnostic tools to aid first responders/physicians in identification of distinct injury patterns caused by directed energy sources. These data are also used to establish guidelines to ensure the appropriate care and treatment for directed energy injuries is implemented.

The Challenge:

  • Develops, leads, and conducts protocol-driven scientific research addressing various aspect of military medicine, including, but not limited to: biomodelling, biophotonics, diagnostic platforms, and directed energy health/medical effects

  • Determine requirements from approved experimental protocols and scheduling exposures of appropriate RF field power density, pulse duration, and pulse repetition rate

  • Execute complex laboratory tests of RF systems and independently executing a redesign and modification of in-service RF systems to meet experimental requirements

  • Reverse engineer RF field power density, pulse duration, and pulse repetition rate from potential RF exposure scenarios

  • Monitor and maintain real-time data collection capabilities

  • Develop and implement new laboratory standard operating procedures

  • Test new instrumentation and participating in experiment design

  • Write protocol-driven research proposals, animal use protocols, human research protocols, abstracts, conference presentations, technical reports, final reports, standard operating procedures and peer-reviewed manuscripts

  • Provide guidance to junior scientist contract personnel on the evaluation of data sets, development of presentation materials, writing of Government approved SOPs for research under contract and presenting findings at technical and professional meetings

  • Oversees junior contract personnel during the preparation of experimental subjects and aids in the training and the development of experimental subjects for experimental procedures in accordance with approved animal or human use protocols

  • Aids in the development and establishment of in vivo and in vitro model systems, data acquisition, and data analysis

  • Oversees contract personnel associated with research projects; manages research data

  • Performs surgical and non-surgical procedures on animal models as needed for both survival and non-survival studies
