Role Overview and Responsibilities

Job Summary

 

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the mechanical design, integration, and related testing for power electronics solutions for Aerospace and Defense customers.  The successful candidate must be capable of creating innovative solutions for exciting new programs with demanding packaging and environmental requirements while achieving a manufacturable solution.  Having knowledge of Aerospace and Defense standards, such as ARINC, RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810, applying principles and best design practices to solutions is required.

 

The ability to communicate with customers as the Company's mechanical engineering expert regarding specifications for new products, as well as internally with the Company's design and manufacturing teams to support all mechanical design related activities is required.  Must have the ability to apply knowledge and experience to mature the Company's mechanical design and testing processes while mentoring more junior mechanical engineerings.

 

Position specific tasks include, but are not limited, to the following:

 

  • Create Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) mechanical packaging designs that are either industry standard (i.e., ARINC 400 or ARINC 600 compliant) or custom to best meet customer specifications.  This includes design layout, details design, tolerance studies, selection of material/parts and finishes, fastening and joining while considering manufacturability, shock, vibration, thermal stress, heat transfer, electromagnetic interference and magnetic shielding, reliability, maintainability, and sustainability.
  • Lead mechanical improvement activities for LRU mechanical packaging designs throughout product life-cycle.  this includes capturing and maintaining TTEs mechanical engineering best practices, training and mentoring junior and senior mechanical engineers, facilitating mechanical engineering based Root-Cause Corrective Analysis (RCCA) activities, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Analyze thermal path and power consumption requirements to optimize mechanical design layouts.
  • Perform detailed mechanical analysis to stimulate the effects of shock, vibration, thermal stress, heat transfer, and creepage clearance.
  • Support prototype and qualification unit build activities.
  • Support prototype, Highly-Accelerated Life Testing (HALT), and qualification unit environmental testing activities.
  • Support and participate in related program meetings and engineering reviews.
  • Lead and present mechanical design and analysis results in customer meetings, as required.
  • Author engineering reports and assist in the preparation of world-class technical proposals.
  • Support and participate in CCB activities, as required.
  • Support supplier and material selection activities.
  • Prepare engineering change orders, as required.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Mechanical design, packaging and documentation of power electronics solutions (i.e., Power Supplies and Power Converters).
  • Perform analyses to ensure that power electronics meet challenging performance and environmental conditions such as thermal, corona, vibration, and shock.
  • Knowledge of fabrication such as machining, welding, sheet metal, potting, impregnation, etc.
  • Design knowledge of colling methods which include liquid cooled, air-cooled, water-cooled, fuel cooled, etc.
  • Design experience in packaging and mechanical design in challenging environments such as corona, structural noise, airborne noise, shock audible noise, etc.
  • Great communication skills including both verbal and written.
