About the role

Requisition Id 13476

Overview:

We are seeking a Project Engineer who will focus on the design and integration of beam transport line sub-systems for the Second Target Station (STS) project. This position resides in the Accelerator Systems group in the STS Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The STS is a $2B Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing DOE Office of Science neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Accelerator Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness of cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come.

The STS Accelerator Systems group is responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and testing of all hardware necessary to transport the 700 kW, 15 Hz proton beam to a rotating tungsten target, to create ~ 22 beams of moderated neutrons.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with Accelerator Systems engineers and designers to develop beamline assembly and component design packages as assigned.

  • Lead and participate in design reviews and drive peer review of designs within scope.

  • Draft, track, review, and manage the following project document types:

    • Interface control documents describing the interfaces between the assigned Accelerator Systems scope and technical scope in conventional facilities, the rest of the Accelerator Systems scope and integrated control systems

    • Requirements definition documents

    • Design and Analysis Calculations (DACs)

    • Fabrication drawings

    • Technical Specifications

    • Design Failure Modes & Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) and Fault Trees

    • Statements of Work

    • Installation Plans

    • Test Plans

  • Deliver assigned work packages to meet the project schedule.

  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.

  • Collaborate with Neutron Science Directorate (NScD) operations to ensure operations requirements are captured.

  • Ensure traceability between operations requirements, accelerator requirements, design features and design verification test plans.

  • Ensure that the Scope of Work on project procurements is technically complete and integrated with cost and schedule requirements.

  • Manage assigned equipment procurement contracts to ensure that equipment is procured and delivered on schedule.

  • Develop strong working relationships across the project with Control Account Managers, line managers, vendors, sponsors, and project support organizations including ES&H, QA, procurement, business, project controls, and human resources.

  • Represent the STS Project by participating in and presenting project information at reviews, conferences and workshops.

  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values
