Description

Dr. Kathryn Oliver is seeking a Research Specialist to join her team within the Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pulmonology, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis & Sleep. Dr. Oliver’s research program broadly investigates ways in which ribosome function and mRNA surveillance impact aberrant protein synthesis in the context of inherited conditions such as cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Projects are highly translational, incorporating use of human- and murine-derived materials.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.
  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

Activities routinely performed in the laboratory include:

  • Cell culture, nucleotide transfection, high-resolution microscopy, and drug discovery approaches.
  • Molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA isolation and purification; PCR amplification; RT-qPCR; gel electrophoresis; and preparation of sequencing libraries.
  • Biochemical protocols including but not limited to cytotoxicity assays; protein quantification and visualization (e.g. western blot, protein half-life, immunoprecipitation); ELISA-like cell surface assays; mRNA stability assays; sucrose gradient fractionation; ribosome profiling; and membrane protein electrophysiology.
  • Processing clinical specimens (e.g. cells, blood) from CF and non-CF patients, as well as a variety of tissues from C57BL/6.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a background in genetics and/or molecular biology.
  • Familiar with data analysis applications such as GraphPad Prism, R, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Eager to broaden scientific knowledge and develop new technical skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication abilities.
  • Analytical and problem-solving mindset.
  • Ability to perform tasks effectively, collegially, professionally, and with utmost integrity.
  • Work independently and/or on a team as appropriate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Embrace working with individuals from a broad variety of backgrounds.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
