POSITION SUMMARY
The Shelter Lead (SL) position is a part of the Community Life Team and is responsible for contributing to the relational engagement and care of Denver Rescue Mission’s (DRM) guests at the Lawrence Street Community Center, Lawrence Street Shelter and/or Emergency Shelter(s) operated by DRM. The SL will have a clear presence of DRM Leadership, responsibility and care for these facilities (inside and out) and the activities that take place therein, bringing issues of concern to the attention of the Shelter Supervisor or, in their absence, the Director of Community Life.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Unique Service Coordination
- Coordinates the Community Life staff to meet the needs and requirements of the assigned facility, as outlined by the Director of Community Life, in line with Denver Rescue Mission policies and procedures following the direction of the shift Supervisor.
- Coordinates staff for the assigned shift and site(s), as well as assigned emergency or support services, as assigned by the Community Life Team and/or other Emergency Services Leadership. Focus areas include but are not limited to 1) Safety and Security; 2) Community Involvement; 3) Housekeeping; 4) Supply Ordering and Inventory; 5) Resource Room.
- This position works under the direction of the Shift Supervisor and provides leadership and direction to Community Life staff and facility in the absence of the Supervisor in the location the SL is assigned.
Staff Oversight
- Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, assists with the oversight of shift staff to provide adequate coverage of the facility, meets the needs of the guests and executes scheduled events. Serves as the primary point of contact for staff in the absence of the Shift Supervisor.
- Provides directions for staff to follow Denver Rescue Mission policies and procedures and established practices by engaging and directing staff.
- Ensures that staff records all incidents into SCRIBE, correctly applying DRM policies, procedures and practices to recording incidents and applying Asked to Leave’s (ATLs) when needed.
- Brings all areas of concern to the attention of the Shift Supervisor and in their absence to the attention of the Director.
Security and Safety
- The SL is responsible for the security and safety of the facility and the guests during their shift. This may require administering CPR or other First Aid Procedures but does not include any type of medical procedure. It is also the responsibility of the SL to see that situations that could jeopardize the safety of the Mission and its occupants are handled appropriately. The SL must deal with difficult and unruly guests and work towards keeping the Shelter free from weapons and the active use of drugs and alcohol in the Shelter by guests.
- Sees to the welfare of guests outside of the shelter by calling police, ambulances or?opening or providing shelter from the elements especially during weather emergencies.
- Monitors and relays weather information to the Shelter Supervisor and/or Director of Community Life in case overflow is needed.
- Immediately notifies the Director of emergency situations including events such as fire, flood, death, or other incidents of concern.
- Completes a shift report that is sent to the Shift Supervisor, Director and Senior Director to communicate items of interest, concern, and items that need additional attention.
Support of other Departments and Partners
- Works with the Homeless Resolution Team, to provide an environment that is supportive of their efforts, with the overarching goal of Community Life being that of exiting individuals from homelessness.
- Supports Guest Services’ efforts to safely enroll and scan guests into shelter and responds to communicated needs in a timely manner.
- Supports and facilitates the efforts of the Operations Team, including custodial, kitchen, maintenance and other DRM departments.
- Supports the approved efforts of outside agencies and community partners to meet the needs of our guests. These efforts must be pre-approved by the Director of Community Life.
Facilities
- Cleanliness: The SL ensures that the Mission is cleaned according to the established standard. This includes daily cleaning, removal, dispersion, or storage of all clutter, trash, donations, parking lot trash, sidewalks, etc. There should not be an unnecessary accumulation of anything. If the Shelter needs anything beyond what is normally understood to be mandatory, it must be cleared by the Director of Community Life.
