About the role

Job Description Summary

The Program Director of Football Nutrition will support the Program Director for Athletic Training & Sports Performance with all nutrition services provided to University of Maryland Football student-athletes. The Director of Football Nutrition will be primarily responsible for providing nutrition education, counseling, and support to football student-athletes, coaches, and staff. This position will be responsible for all nutritional aspects for these individuals, team meal planning and medical nutrition therapy utilizing the latest scientific evidence and practical sports nutrition recommendations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Provide individual medical nutrition therapy.
•Analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance in the context of athletic performance and health.
•Counsel on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and nutritional supplementation.
•Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of football student athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.
•Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.
•Collaborate with sports medicine staff to monitor student-athlete hydration, determine sweat rates and cramping risk, and design individualized hydration plans.
•Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, and micronutrient deficiencies
•Attend football staff meetings, provide coaching staff with updates on student-athletes progress and areas for improvement.
•Attend weekly department-wide sports nutrition staff meeting.
•Other duties as assigned.

PREFERENCES:

Master’s degree in nutrition or dietetics, exercise science, food science, sports administration, or related field from an accredited college or university.
Other: Eligible for Licensure as required by the State of Maryland Board of Dietetic Practice. Active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Active member of the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Moderate physical effort and levels of dexterity, including but not limited to: the ability to stand for long periods of time in all weather conditions; the ability to move items weighing up to 50 pounds; the ability to assist injured individuals on/off playing surfaces; and the ability to climb, stand, stoop, run, and type.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience offering nutrition counseling and education as a registered dietitian in the field of sports nutrition or athletics.

Other: Eligible for Licensure as required by the State of Maryland Board of Dietetic Practice.  Active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Knowledge of sports nutrition and the treatment of eating disorders.

Knowledge of nutrition and nutrition counseling.

Ability and willingness to work early mornings, evenings and weekends.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to work collaboratively with all members of the Sports Medicine Staff.

Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to patient service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

Preferences: Experience supporting Big 10 athletic teams or other collegiate experience will be considered.
