The Towson University Counseling Center seeks to fill a Mental Health Crisis Response Clinician position. The Mental Health Crisis Co-Responder Team is an innovative approach to managing mental health crises on campus. Clinicians will provide immediate, on-site, mental health crisis assistance to students who are experiencing mental health crises, assessment of appropriate action steps, and follow-up services. Team members will partner with campus police in responding to mental health emergencies on campus. Clinicians will also provide training and education to the campus community about mental health crisis management.

Responsibilities and Duties

 

Accompanies Towson University Police Department (TUPD) officers to provide on-site, in-person rapid response to students with behavioral health concerns and / or crisis during both traditional and non-traditional working hours. Conducts in-depth mental health assessments of students in crisis, determines the level of risk to the individual and/or others, noting contributing environmental, medical, psychiatric, and/or interpersonal factors. Issues emergency petitions when a higher level of care is clinically indicated, and the individual in crisis is unwilling to enter a higher level of care on a voluntary basis. Accompanies clients in need of hospitalization to the emergency room and provides collateral information to hospital staff. Provides or secures emotional and resource support for others in the TU community impacted by critical incidents. Communicates and collaborates with Counseling Center staff, Student Outreach and Support, the Behavioral Intervention Team team, and other campus resources to facilitate continuity of care for students. Provides ongoing case management and follow-up to students following a crisis to facilitate stabilization and transition to counseling, psychiatry, or other appropriate campus and/or community resources. Facilitates outreach about crisis prevention and management including resource fairs and community meetings. Facilitates training and educational activities such as mental health first aid and Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) trainings and workshops for faculty, staff and students.

 

Qualifications and Skills

 
  • Master's degree
  • Must be licensed as a mental health provider in Maryland or license-eligible (licensed as a mental health provider in another state, licensed in Maryland within 6-months). Independent licensure strongly preferred (LCSW-C or LCPC).
  • Minimum of two years' experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teammates, campus partners and community groups.
