About the Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students and beginning professionals with practical experience in a specific area of museum work at The Museum of Modern Art. Interns participate in weekly professional development activities designed to increase understanding of the Museum’s various collections, exhibitions, and departments. The Museum hosts approximately 25 interns in various departments across our institution. Participants may arrange for academic credit through their school, but it is not a requirement.

MoMA Summer 2025 internships require a commitment of four days per week. The schedule is Monday-Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. One must have a minimum of two years of college completed (or equivalent) by June 2025 in order to apply.

All summer intern applications are due by Friday, March 7th by 11:59 PM EST.

Department Projects & Tasks

The intern will contribute to exhibition design though the lens of sustainability and accessibility, exhibition design model updates (both virtual and physical models), and collection support. Tasks will broaden horizons for a candidate passionate about architecture and/or interior design; develop and expand upon the 2D and 3D modelling skills needed for exhibition design; and provide exposure to the cross-departmental collaborative work environment of the Museum (collaboration with Creative/Graphic Design, Art Handling, Curatorial, Learning & Engagement, Exhibition Planning & Administration, Conservation, and more).

Projects will include updating and tracking inventory databases and creating casework/pedestal drawings for Collection & Special Exhibitions for sustainability in exhibition furniture & casework. Intern work will contribute to the department's goals of expanding pedestal sharing with other institutions, exhibition team-building and integrating sustainability into design and production processes. Projects will also include accessibility initiatives including a Wayfinding project, experimentation with building-wide design interventions, and non-tech building systems (floors, furniture, stanchions).

Department Skillset Requirements

Candidates with an background in Design and/or Architecture (majors in Interior Design, Industrial Design and Experimental/Experiential Design have previously interned in this department). Applicants should have a working knowledge of Rhino, AutoCAD and other rendering/CAD technology. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite is required. Interest or experience in Studio Art, Art History, Performing Arts is preferred.
