Position Summary: 

 

The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an adjunct Music Creation teaching position in the Music Creation Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD commencing September 2026.

 

The successful candidate will have experience teaching musicianship – encompassing both music theory and ear training – to students of all ages and levels (beginner to advanced) in both individual and group settings. Opportunities for teaching are currently available at the Peabody Preparatory’s Baltimore (Downtown) campus, as well as online.

 

The successful candidate will join a highly skilled and dedicated faculty as part of a vibrant and growing department committed to helping all students – those who perform music, as well as those who create it – become more knowledgeable and versatile musicians. We embrace the novice musician as well as the serious student aspiring to a career in music. Ideal candidates should be experienced in teaching musicianship to students of all ages and levels and comfortable with both in-person and online modalities.

 

Duties:

 

Independently:

  • Teach musicianship courses for beginner and intermediate students of all ages, both in person and online.
  •  

In conjunction with the Chair:

  • Develop musicianship courses for beginner and intermediate students of all ages that can be delivered both in person and online.
  • Develop a placement test to determine the appropriate level for interested students.
  • Consult with instrumental/vocal department chairs to ensure a curriculum that meets the needs of their students, particularly those seeking to fulfill certificate requirements.
  • Consult with previous musicianship faculty to gain a better understanding of the program’s history and development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music and/or music education required. A master’s degree or equivalent experience and training is preferred.
  • Background as a composer, performer, and/or scholar.
  • Experience as a musicianship instructor to advanced, intermediate, and beginner students of all ages.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience teaching musicianship in the context of multiple genres of music – especially Western classical music, jazz, musical theatre, and pop – preferred.
  • Experience teaching group classes is preferred.
