Position Overview

Under the direction of the Writing Center Manager, the Professional Writing Center Consultant will offer individual writing consulting with writers in the Ohio State University community and will contribute to the culture of writing at Ohio State.

Key responsibilities of this position include: 

  • Consulting one-to-one with students, staff, and faculty from all disciplines on a variety of writing issues to help individuals grow as writers and improve specific pieces of writing. 
  • Assisting writers on a variety of texts, including research papers, lab reports, creative writing, dissertations, administrative documents, proposals, and/or resumes, and other application materials. 
  • Helping writers at any stage in the writing process, addressing issues like organization and idea development, as well as grammar and style issues. 

In addition to offering writing consultations each week, the Professional Writing Center Consultant will also participate in and contribute to weekly professional development meetings. They may also assist with a range of writing center projects, such as developing workshops on writing, creating online and print resources, facilitating writing groups, and/or engaging in relevant research projects as needed.

This position is a temporary, part-time, non-tenure track Associated Faculty position.

Performance Objectives

  • Utilize knowledge of writing center pedagogy to inform their tutoring practice during in-person and/or virtual sessions with writers
  • Tailor their pedagogical approach to the needs of writers and be able to adapt their approach as needed throughout individual sessions
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with peers, administrators, and writing center clients, including via digital outreach and in-person events

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: A minimum of two years of writing center experience and a master's degree in English, Education, or a related field. Candidates will display excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders. Candidates will also demonstrate strong organization and time management skills, as well as the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Desired: Successful candidates will also have experience in both tutoring and administrative roles in a writing center, as well as experience with scheduling platforms such as WCOnline.
