About the role

Overview

The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for a FY 12-month 0.75-1.0 FTE Professional Practice Assistant or Associate Professor of Veterinary Professional Skills Instruction position (non-tenure track) with an assignment of 90% teaching and 10% service.

This candidate will play a pivotal role in introducing students to the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors tied to the development of their professional identity as future veterinarians. The candidate is expected to work with the team to design, develop, and deliver hands-on professional skills-related courses in the new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree curriculum that centers around three programmatic learning outcomes for students:

  • Communication and collaboration
  • Practice management and leadership skills
  • Development of a strong professional identity and behaviors expected of a veterinarian.
  • The professional skills program also plays a supportive role in clinical reasoning and evidence based veterinary medicine. Course development is intended to support the spectrum of new graduate competencies that includes relationship-centered clinical communication, personal and business finance, resilience strategies, ethical decision making, professionalism and more. The candidate will join the professional skills team and contribute to the continued development and implementation of the curriculum.

    Responsibilities

    Position Responsibilities for Teaching:

    • Develop and deliver professional skills-related content and courses in the DVM degree curriculum
    • Develop and deliver innovative teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and evaluation criteria to measure veterinary students’ professional skills integration and proficiency
    • Contribute to developing the DVM degree curriculum and other curriculum activities associated with their expertise

    Position Responsibilities for Service:

    • Contribute to the department, college, university, and profession through service. (e.g., serve on graduate student, curriculum, hiring, and admissions committees)

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • DVM or equivalent degree
    • Experience teaching professional skills or at least 5 years experience in veterinary clinical practice
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as a team member in a collaborative setting

    To be considered for the rank of Professional Practice Associate Professor you must possess all the minimum qualifications plus:

    • Demonstrated ability to design and successfully implement professional skills curricula in a DVM degree program.
    • At least 12 years of clinical experience and demonstrated practice management expertise.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience teaching professional skills to veterinary students
    • Formal Business management training or practice management experience

    College/Department Highlights

    In 2022 the State of Utah approved the establishment of a full 4-year DVM degree program, we have received our Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the AVMA COE and our inaugural class of 40 students began Fall of 2025. The subsequent classes will is targeted to be 80 students starting Fall of 2026. This position offers multiple opportunities for professional development in instruction, curriculum design, and innovative teaching methods. Current teaching methods for professional skills include Team-Based learning, Communication Simulations, discussion courses, with supplementary didactic teaching.
