Electrician Apprentice Job Summary

DOA Facility Maintenance team seeks an Electrician Apprentice to learn on-the-job under the supervision of a journey person electrician. The apprenticeship program will teach you how to assess and repair electrical problems on commercial and/or industrial job sites. As an Electrician Apprentice, you will complete both hands-on projects on job sites and coursework in a classroom setting. To start, your duties will include basic cleaning and maintenance tasks and progress to more skill-based tasks as you gain experience. At the completion of the apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity apply an electrical license if our state.

Electrician Apprentice Duties and Responsibilities

• Assists in effectively and safely performing a wide range of electrical system tasks, including the troubleshooting, repair, restoration, and modification of campus electrical equipment in accordance with the apprenticeship program on-the-job training requirements.
• Supplements practical trade experience by attending vocational / technical trade school during non-business hours, following a defined program of apprenticeship related educational and instructional courses.
• Reads and interprets electrical technical documentation, including drawings, submittals, technical manuals, codes and specifications.
• Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions in the installation, troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems.
• Learn to use and become proficient in using meters, gauges and other measuring devices to calculate requirements and tolerances.
• Carry and deliver materials to respective job sites
• Install, repair, and maintain various electrical wiring systems and equipment
• Use measuring equipment and hand tools to perform conduit work
• Follow building and safety codes and regulations
• Continually maintain a clean and safe working environment

Length of Training

• The Apprenticeship Program can be 1 to 2 years, depending on experience and aptitude upon entering the program.
• Other factors can impact the length of the program, including attendance, satisfactory completion of milestones and job performance.

Compensation for the Apprenticeship Program:

• Starting Salary: $20 per hour
• Wage increases per milestone mastery .75 (four milestones to master)
• Max pay of $23
• Subsequent years increased will be directed in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship Guidelines

Electrician Apprentice Requirements and Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED certificate
• A valid US driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. with assistance from others or material movers
• Excellent customer service skills and a professional appearance and demeanor
• Skilled with using the basic tools of the warm and conditioned air (HVAC) trade
• Should have a strong command of both simple and complex mathematical concepts in algebra and geometry
• Familiar with common hand tools
• Willingness and agreement to attend and complete formal technical training to support on-the-job training (OJT)
