Job Description

HII Mission Technologies Newport News Direct Support is seeking candidates to join out E25 Virginia Class Submarine (VCS) Acoustics Test Engineering Group. Candidates with prior US Navy Submarine experience in SONAR and Hydrophone operation and maintenance experience are encouraged to apply. This position is located at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News Virginia and is not remote.

Essential Job Responsibilities

The Acoustics (SONAR) Engineering Technician is a demanding position requiring in-depth technical knowledge, a solid grasp of the requirements of and extensive Commercial-Off-The-Shelf electronics experience. Candidate must be able to effectively communicate with internal and external customers including SUPSHIP, NAVSEA, CWITT & PMS450E, and coordinate with many different organizations to safely and successfully accomplish testing.  The candidate will perform testing, maintenance and operation of the Core SONAR System including arrays, hydrophones and transducer sensors.  In addition, candidate will ensure that all systems function properly as designed and in accordance with the required test procedures, generate Preliminary Problem Reports when discrepancies are found in equipment operation/functions of the SONAR system software, and assist in the problem resolution phases. 

Provides technical support to engineers on a variety of technical tasks. Gathers, maintains, formats, compiles, and manipulates technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes. Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics). Performs detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas; preliminary analyses of data where guidelines are provided in such areas as trajectory adequacy, model dimensional consistency; and quantitative judgments concerning technical data. Uses personal computer in performance of analyses and development of documentation/reports. May conduct tests and record data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

• AA or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 3 years of related experience, or HS + 5 years related (DoD/USN) experience.
• Prior US Navy Submarine Experience
• Active SECRET Security Clearance

Preferred Requirements

• Experience with SONAR System Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Repair on US Navy Submarines
• Experience with Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Electronics
• Prior experience in Submarine Construction/Overhaul
