About the role

Overview

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a Research Technician who is a versatile machinist and design specialist and will perform technical procedures in a teaching and/or research laboratory and/or perform field research under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. This individual will bring strong machining expertise while actively contributing to the broader design and implementation of experimental setups for cutting edge research and for student capstone projects. The ideal candidate will collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students, offering technical guidance from concept development through final assembly and testing. The start date for this position can be as early as January 15, 2025.

Responsibilities

The Research Technician assists instructors and researchers by performing lab tests, collecting data, setting up, operating, and maintaining equipment, maintaining various records of department equipment and facilities. The Research Technician also helps prepare work schedules, conduct lab meetings, ensure federal and state compliance standards, oversee lab work, and recruit, train and oversee student lab technicians.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification:

  • Six years of related experience; or a Bachelor’s degree plus two years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Technical Expertise
    • Experienced in machining parts using a variety of tools such as mills and lathes, including manual and CNC operations.
    • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for design support and collaboration.
    • Skilled in welding and additive manufacturing (e.g., 3D printing), with a strong understanding of material properties.
    • Experience with single and 3-phase power.
    • Experience with plumbing.
    • Proficiency with carpentry tools.
  • Broader Design and Problem-Solving Skills
    • Ability to contribute to the full design process, from concept development to final implementation.
    • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, particularly with experimental setups and mechanical systems.
    • Familiarity with instrumentation and system integration for research and testing purposes.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty, researchers, and students of varying technical expertise.
    • Ability to explain complex machining and design processes in an accessible manner.
  • Workshop Safety and Organization
    • Comprehensive knowledge of workshop safety protocols and practices.
    • Proven ability to maintain an organized, efficient, and safe workshop environment.
  • Education and Experience
    • Completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent experience in machining and fabrication.
    • Prior experience supporting research or educational projects in an academic or industrial environment is highly desirable.

    This position requires onsite work of 8 hours per workday and moderate physical activity, including the handling of estimated weight objects up to 60 pounds and/or standing or walking more than four hours per day. Employees are exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Use of ladders may be required. The work environment may involve exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
