The Senior Academic Advisor in University Exploration within the Office of Undergraduate Education is a fully experienced professional providing comprehensive academic counseling/advising to undeclared and undecided undergraduate students in University Exploration with an emphasis on advising Transfer students in the unit and reports to University Exploration's advising manager for the Transfer student squad within University Exploration.

Helps students assess their academic strengths and goals in relationship to the academic programs available at the university. Assists in course selection consistent with developing goals, interests and needs of special population of students. Encourages co-curricular engagement by students. Advises new Ohio State Transfer students during Orientation scheduling appointments. Welcomes new transfer students into University Exploration, helping them explore their options for majors and helping to translate their prior credits, interests and priorities into an advisable schedule during their first term at Ohio State. Monitors student progress and intervenes appropriately. Consistently refers advisees to appropriate university resources and offices. Serves as informal resource to less experienced colleagues. Responds to student emails and completes advising notes in a timely manner.

Assists in the creation, revision and evaluation of Transfer Survey class. Teaches introductory Transfer Survey classes. Modifies delivery to accommodate multiple learning styles. Works knowledgeably with students' Transfer and Examination credit. Manages referral services and identifies support options available within the campus community. Works on assigned advising projects. Identifies new resources and collaborations for resolving student cases. Actively engages with professional development to gain further knowledge to best serve students. Participates in administrative committees within the unit and across campus.

Initiates and leads special projects, collaborates on projects led by others within or external partners, performs administrative tasks to support counseling related functions assigned by Director. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree or 2+ years of equivalent experience (Master’s required for teaching). Years of relevant experience required: 2-4.

Deep understanding of programs, specialty areas, and academic and university policies. Demonstrates adaptive relational skills. Demonstrates superior communication skills; able to provide detail, depth, and context. Able to recommend policy, practice, and program changes to unit and/or university leadership. Applies theory to advising practice across different student populations. Understands and follows FERPA guidelines; trains, interprets, and explains FERPA guidelines to colleagues and stakeholders. Able to support/mentor other advisors on complex topics. Demonstrates sophisticated cultural competence across multiple cultures and/or identities. Able to identify and predict ramifications of current and proposed policies and practices on the student population and their programs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Professional certification or licensure is desired. Preferred minimum years of relevant experience: 4-8.
