Your Impact
At Axon, we build mission-critical products that save lives. As Sr Director of Infrastructure Engineering, you will lead the team that powers the Axon Platform. The Infrastructure Engineering team ensures that our cloud products achieve the high level of availability, performance, and quality that is critical for emergency responders to do their jobs. This is an important role, and by reporting directly to our VP of Platform Services, you will have an opportunity to collaborate with other engineering leadership across the orgs to create a strong technically-minded minded culture that can move fast, operate at scale, and reduce toil.
Beyond owning the infrastructure for our products, you will also have a key goal: making our engineers’ live as easy as possible. You will drive the right tools and processes to ensure that our product teams can build and deploy quickly while maintaining a high degree of quality. You live and breathe operational excellence and are obsessed about mitigating any issues that negatively impact our customers.
Our infrastructure engineering team shapes the raw IaaS provided by hyper scale cloud providers like Azure and AWS, and molds it into the application environment in which our product teams build their services. We are cloud agnostic and run discrete, isolated regions around the world on AWS and Azure. The team also owns core share services like our load balancers, DNS, and VPN. They design and operate our compute environment and provide a portfolio of data stores for use by our teams.
What You’ll Do:
Location: Seattle, WA, United States or Remote
Reports to: VP of Platform Services
Direct Reports: 5-7 Engineering Managers with a global team of ~50 spread across North American, UK/EU and APAC.
- Apply software engineering to infrastructure development and management
- Maintain and improve Axon’s production system reliability and availability, consistently meet or exceed SLA obligations
- Drive strategic improvements in systems, processes, and practices, and build a culture of automation
- Work with key members of the architect team and partner teams to drive definition, implementation and adoption of infrastructure and devops technical strategies
- Hire, develop and nurture a world class SRE/infrastructure engineering team
- Stay current on advancements in infrastructure landscape and influence adoption across enterprise
- Provide 24X7 production support for product teams and SRE-owned services
- Provide hands-on coaching and guidance for the engineering team in solving hard problems
- Accurately and confidently communicate status of team and initiatives to Sr. leadership
- Forecast and manage infrastructure budget and spending (Capex, Opex)
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field preferred
- 12+ years’ experience in SRE, DevOps or Software Engineering with 8+ years in management
- Experience in development & operation of cloud IaaS and PaaS offerings such as Azure, AWS or GCP
- Experience with strong knowledge of automating Cloud base deployment like Terraform for configuring, building and deploying changes
- Understanding of containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
- Ability and eagerness to quickly learn new technologies and approaches
- Experience working within an Agile Software Development Lifecycle
- Strong people and organizational leader
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Optional:
- Have successfully led global engineering teams for over 4+ years
- Experience in leading both SRE and software engineering
- Experience with Service mesh (e.g. Istio)
- Experience with Linux administration skills (CentOS, Ubuntu, etc.) is a plus
- Familiarity with configuration management systems (e.g. Chef, Puppet, Ansible) is a plus
- Working proficiency with one or more high-level programming languages used in systems engineering such as C, C++, Python, Golang or Java.
- Familiarity with distributed source control sys
