The Lead Surgical Technologist provides leadership, technical expertise, and support to the surgical team to ensure efficient and safe operations within the operating room. This position assists the OR Manager in creating and implementing a Surgical Tech preceptorship, assists the Charge RN in ensuring proper instrumentation and supplies are available for upcoming cases, mentors surgical technologists, and maintaining compliance with hospital standards policies and regulatory requirements. The Lead Surgical Tech ensures adherence to sterile technique, promotes a culture of safety, and supports continuous learning and professional growth within the department.
Responsibilities/Duties:
- Functions as a member of the surgical tech team.
- Participate in the on-call rotation.
- Assist in Sterile Processing when required.
- Serves as the primary resource and role model for surgical technologists in all aspects of operating room procedures and standards.
- Has awareness of the upcoming surgical schedule and ensures equipment and supply availability.
- Prepares operating rooms for procedures, ensuring instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly set up and functional.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgical team during procedures to promote efficiency and patient safety.
- Oversees proper care, handling, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Collaborate with OR leadership and surgeons to develop a Surgical Technology onboarding and preceptorship program.
- Collaborate with OR leadership to develop, coordinate, and present annual education relevant to the Surgical Technology role.
- Assists with orientation, training, and continuing education of surgical technologists and new staff members.
- Collaborates with OR leadership and sterile processing to address instrument or equipment issues.
- Monitors adherence to infection control and sterile technique standards.
- Monitors department workflow during assigned shifts, ensuring completion of essential tasks.
- Enforces compliance with organization and department policies, processes and procedures
- Serves as a resource to department staff for questions or problems, and escalates as necessary.
- Provides department leadership with input regarding areas of deficiency and recommended corrective actions.
- Share and support organizational and departmental goals and communications
- Leads by example and promotes STAR standards in all interactions
Education/Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program required.
- Associate degree or higher preferred
- Minimum of 8 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in leadership or preceptor experience preferred.
- Current Surgical Technologist certification (CST) through NBSTSA required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced certifications (e.g., specialty-specific training) preferred.
