The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) practice group supports well-being, primary care, and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. Our integrated service delivery model provides dynamic health and well-being promotion, support and programming, student disability services including guidance and resources, and in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics, and remote support through phone and online resources.

We are seeking a Medical Assistant for a full-time position in the East Baltimore office with a requirement for availability to travel to other Baltimore area campuses and the DC campus for service delivery and in-person meetings, when necessary. This may include being available evenings and weekends for extended clinic hours, outreach programs, and crisis or emergency response.


The CMA works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to optimize patient outcomes and is responsible for providing comprehensive and age-appropriate primary care to the students/learners of Johns Hopkins University.


This is a full-time non-exempt position, reporting directly to the Associate Director of Primary Care for East Baltimore and Washington, DC.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver care that is culturally competent, affirming a wide range of student/learner identities, and promotes the diversity, equity, and inclusion values of the Student Health and Well-Being practice.
  • Utilize SHWB primary care policies, procedures, and protocols including standing orders to guide patient care.
  • Create and maintain an environment of patient-focused care, anticipating and appropriately responding to student/learner needs and ensuring that the student/learners’ overall experience meets or exceeds standards of medical care.
  • Communicate with patients via phone and secure messaging, as appropriate.
  • Obtain vital signs and patient history such as medications, allergies, and smoking status.
  • Perform in-house laboratory and screening tests, procedures, and treatments per protocol and as ordered.
  • Administer medications and immunizations.
  • Act as chaperone during sensitive exams including breast and genital exams.
  • Obtain all specimens including venipuncture as ordered.
  • Prepare lab specimens and accurately complete forms for transport.
  • Ensure safe and efficient patient flow including reviewing clinic schedules and monitoring the waiting room.
  • Maintain exam rooms, lab(s), and supply storage areas including quality controls, inventory, and coordinating with outside contractors for biohazard waste removal, laundry, etc.
  • Track high-risk referrals and lab tests.
  • Perform monthly equipment checks.
  • Participate in reviewing vaccine compliance for all students, with particular emphasis on the School of Medicine, including visiting Medical Students.
  • Delegated responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
    • Assist with prior authorizations.
    • Complete forms and paperwork.
    • Communicate with current patients who have canceled or missed appointments or been lost to follow-up.
  • Maintain patient records and reports according to standards required by the State, University, and SHWB.
  • Provide support for quality improvement and patient satisfaction projects within the clinical practice.
  • Participate in flu & other vaccine clinics in coordination with JHU and JH Occupational Health Services.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to all laws, regulations, licensure requirements, and SHWB policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
