GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, is responsible for ensuring that all personnel and apparatus arrive at the emergency scene as quickly and safely as possible, utilizing the routes of choice; that all equipment on assigned apparatus is maintained and functions properly. Assists in maintenance duties regarding the station building, apparatus, equipment, and grounds. Maintains records and prepares reports as required. Reports to the Fire Captain and/or Fire Battalion Chief.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Assists in the proper and adequate response of trained firefighters and equipment to handle any emergency or request for assistance from the public or any agencies in order to protect life and property. May supervise as well as takes an active role at emergency scenes and may serve as incident commander until relieved by the fire captain, battalion chief, assistant fire chief, or fire chief.
- Operates apparatus to and from emergencies. May assist in selecting and utilizing appropriate equipment and/or actions to mitigate the incident. Actions may include, but not limited to, operating pumps, setting up and operating aerial apparatus, handling and using nozzles and hose lines, operating ventilation equipment, search and rescue, extrication, emergency first aid (including performing CPR and/or use of AED); climbing ladders, forcible entry, salvage and overhaul; performs rescues above ground level, recues below ground level, rescues in swift water, rescues in lakes and ponds; and other means to control incident; performs duties under stressful conditions while possibly wearing personal protective ensembles (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Assist in the development and implementation of department rules and regulations.
- Participates in training and ensures required position trainings as outlined by standard operating procedures (SOP) are completed. Attends required classes and meetings to remain knowledgeable of modern fire suppression, rescue, and other life safety methods.
- Assists in coordinating and instructing a variety of programs and classes, which may include, but are not limited to, public education, community risk, probationary training, company inspections, smoke detector installation, and department pre-plans.
- Responsible for ensuring that assigned apparatus is clean and that equipment on the apparatus is organized, secure, clean, fueled (gas equipment), painted (tools), and is ready for deployment at an incident.
- Ensures familiarity with location of all streets within the district and location of fire hydrants.
- Essential Job Duties are intended to be examples of duties and are not intended to be all inclusive. There will be other duties as assigned.
- May instruct other classes for the department, county employees, and/or outside agencies. Examples are emergency response, First Aid, CPR, AED, bloodborne pathogens, etc.
- Ensures all safety procedures are followed while responding to and operating in/or around fire apparatus. Sets example that other personnel should follow regarding safety.
- Participates in ensuring that all required station activities are completed.
- Recognizes and preserves evidence of arson and other types of crimes.
- Maintains personal fitness to ensure job performance.
- May serve as crew leader/ride up officer in absence of fire captain provided meets requirements for move-up officer.
- Inspects, repairs, and/or maintains fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, materials, turnout gear, medical response equipment, and vehicles for safe operation.
- Assists in conducting research for evaluating and testing new equipment as well as giving input on specifications for apparatus and other equipment.
- Works with fire chief, assistant fire chief, battalion chief, fire captain, co-workers, other county employees, fire and emergency response personnel from surrounding cities & districts, business and/or property owners, medical personnel, sales representatives, and general public on a daily basis.
- Operates a vehicle and a variety of specialized firefighting equipment, machinery, and office equipment, such as radio equipment, hazardous monitoring equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE), to include Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), fire apparatus, fire pumps, generators, saws, medical equipment, computers, printers, electronic devices, etc.
- May perform duties of firefighter as assigned and/or needed in fire suppression or other emergencies.
