Remuneration according to the TVöD public-sector up to pay grade 13 including attractive public-sector social security benefits.

The job

Within the Research Unit Sustainable Ecotechnologies at the Department of Microbial Biotechnology in the working group Electrobiotechnology of the UFZ we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher (f/m/x) being a chemist or engineer to propel the field of electrobiorefineries.

Your tasks

Based on our philosophy to develop electrobiorefineries, i.e. the combined microbial and electrochemical process lines for the production of chemicals and energy carriers, we expect integration in the existing research group and hence significant contributions to its portfolio by:

  • Developing concepts of electrobiorefineries;
  • Experimental validation and engineering of process steps, especially electroorganic synthesis at biocompatible conditions;
  • Set-up and validation of methods and protocols needed for the development of process lines and process steps using physical and chemical analysis techniques, especially HPLC and GC-MS or respective down-stream processing, e.g. membrane extraction, or computational methods, e.g. using machine learning;
  • Leadership and partial supervision of graduate and PhD students;
  • Provide high quality scientific outputs in the form of journal publications and technology transfer.

Your profile

  • Scientific degree and PhD in chemistry or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  • In-depth knowledge in analytical chemistry or electroorganic chemistry is essential
  • Knowledge in electrobiotechnology as well as artificial intelligence for chemical engineering is a strong surplus
  • Excellent team play, excellent oral and written communication skills in English, German is desirable, experience in writing scientific publications
  • High motivation and very good organisational skills, interested to develop to take leadership
