The South Hill Residency (Sturgeonville Area Headquarters) is seeking experienced individuals to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/ attachments) and perform manual labor. As an Operator Maintenance, you will:

• respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
• attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
• demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
• participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
• complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Opportunities are available at the Sturgeonville Area Headquarters. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date at this and other locations within the South Hill Residency, to include Burnt Store, Chase City, Clarksville, Kenbridge, Victoria and Lawrenceville AHQs.

Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications

• knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
• skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
• skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
• ability to perform heavy manual labor
• ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
