Laboratory Animal Medicine Services (LAMS)
Laboratory Animal Medicine Services (LAMS) is responsible for the daily husbandry and veterinary care of vertebrate animals housed or held by the University of Cincinnati. LAMS also provides training and support to faculty and staff that utilize animals.
Job Overview
The Office of Research LAMS department is hiring a Clinical Veterinarian or a Sr. Clinical Veterinarian to join the growing team of animal care and use professionals. The successful candidate may be appointed to a Clinical Veterinarian or Sr. Clinical Veterinarian based on qualifications, experience, and skills. This position will be responsible for the veterinary care of USDA covered species and rodents, assisting veterinary technical staff with care of medical cases and oversight of surgical procedures, especially with USDA covered species, and assist with training, provide investigator support and guidance, and interact with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Provide regulatory guidance and oversight, helping to maintain university regulatory compliance and AAALAC International accreditation.
The Sr Clinical Veterinarian will also oversee rodent biosecurity and provide investigator support, training, and guidance. They will be part of protocol review and other IACUC duties such as semi-annual inspections.
Essential Functions
Clinical Veterinarian
- Provide medical guidance to veterinary technical staff for rodent health cases and for care of USDA covered species. With the support of the Veterinary Technical team, responsible for pre-anesthesia, anesthesia, and anesthetic selection and maintenance of large and small animal species. Assist research staff in providing the most up to date and effective species-specific anesthesia and analgesia.
- Support the Director by providing didactic and hands-on training for LAMS technical staff, veterinary technicians, and research staff members. Guide the LAMS training staff to advance training programs, including orientation for new faculty.
- Provide support for regulatory compliance and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) activities. Provide investigator support (i.e., training, model development, new study designs). Assist with IACUC duties, performing veterinary pre-review of protocol amendments and veterinary verification and consultation (VVC).
- Assist with review of SOPs, Guidelines, and Quality Assurance Standards. Assist with strategic planning initiatives.
- Report animal, facility and personnel issues and concerns to the appropriate level.
- Participate in the veterinary on-call rotation.

- Provide oversight of the Quality Assurance program and staff. Evaluate the biosecurity program for rodents, including import, export, and colony health monitoring. Perform periodic evaluation, and update, to ensure the program stays current with ever-changing accepted practice.
