About the role

I. GENERAL SUMMARY:
This position supports shelter operations during assigned shifts, ensuring that guests and volunteers are welcomed into a safe and secure environment. The role helps maintain a clean, orderly, and welcoming atmosphere while supporting the overall operation of the shelter. Key responsibilities include implementing shelter policies, assisting with guest needs, and ensuring that daily activities and services run smoothly. Duties may also involve coordinating facility access, monitoring common areas, supporting meal service, maintaining security, and providing basic administrative or outreach support as needed.

The personnel of the Housing Program of St. Vincent de Paul (“SVDP”)of Baton Rouge collaborate with all SVDP staff by embracing all works of charity and justice. All staff collaborate with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served, because in them SVDP sees the face of Christ. All personnel of Housing Programs participate actively in the homeless Continuum of Care to coordinate services, maximize guest benefit, and minimize duplication of effort.

II. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education, Experience & Certifications:
• High School Diploma (or equivalent)
• Experience or skills in working with vulnerable populations

B. Other Qualifications:
• Ability to engage guests in positive changes in their lives through compassionate service, dignified support, and empowerment of individuals to achieve stability and renewed hope
• Ability to use a computer, copier, fax and other office equipment
• Ability to communicate effectively with guests and with leaders
• Respect for Catholic Social Teachings and the mission of SVDP

C. Physical Demands:
• Be able to walk around shelters in both inside and outside areas up to one city block. Be able to see what is happening in the shelter and on the outdoor security monitor
• Ability to stay awake and alert during the entire shift, to answer doors, calls, and offer appropriate support and assistance to shelter guests
• Ability to lift fifteen(15) pounds

D. Working Environment:
• The position is in an office and community environment

IV. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
A. Manage shelter routines and documentation
• Ensure that the census and sign-in sheets match each shift
• Monitor and track guest work schedules
• Answer shelter telephone ringing, answering promptly and courteously
• Conduct a thorough check of facilities prior to leaving to ensure no one is left behind
B. Manage food, supplies and cleanliness
• Ensure cleanliness of shelter through supervising guests completing chores, etc
• Manage the use of supplies in shelter provided for guests
• Manage the provision of food, shelter and safety of guests
• Documentation of and brings to the attention of immediate supervisor any issues or concerns with guests not adhering to the rules of the organization
C. Manage the safety and security of the shelter buildings
• Ensure that the interior and exterior of shelter is safe, secure, and locked at the beginning, during and end of shift
• Ensure the interior and exterior and grounds of the shelter area are clean, engaging guests as voluntary assistants where helpful and appropriate
• Respond to security and fire alarms in safe and secure fashion, making sure that the safety of guests and staff are paramount
D. Collaborating with other SVDP staff for the smooth operation of the overall program
• Other duties as assigned.
