Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Senior Sediment Environmental Scientist with lots of experience in contaminated site management with a focus on sediment investigation and remediation. This leadership position is ideal for a highly experienced environmental scientist who excels in managing complex sediment remediation projects, developing innovative solutions, and mentoring teams. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in sediment site assessments, remedial design, and implementation under CERCLA (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act) regulations. This role requires a proven ability to drive high-level technical decisions, manage large-scale projects, and interact with clients and regulatory agencies at the highest levels.

As a Senior Sediment Environmental Scientist, you will take on a leadership role in managing and directing sediment remediation projects from concept through to post-remediation monitoring. You will be responsible for the strategic direction, technical quality, and regulatory compliance of multiple projects while mentoring junior and mid-level staff. Your role will involve working closely with senior management, clients, and stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in full compliance with environmental regulations.

We are open to having the candidate work from any location within the US Mainland, in what is our preferred work model of a hybrid basis, but we are open to candidates working 100 percent remotely, depending on their current location within the US.  We are also flexible to part time OR full time roles as well.  Whatever situation fits your needs/wants best.

Some of the Key Responsibilities will be:

  • Leadership in Sediment Site Investigations & Characterization:   Lead complex sediment site assessments, environmental investigations, and contaminant assessments in aquatic and terrestrial environments. Provide technical direction on sampling plans, data collection methods, and analysis of sediment, water, and biota to evaluate the extent of contamination and associated risks.
  • Strategic Remedial Design & Technology Leadership:   Develop, oversee, and guide the design of advanced sediment remediation strategies for challenging sites, including dredging, capping, in-situ treatment, and ecological restoration. Lead the preparation of Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Studies (RI/FS), Remedial Action Plans (RAPs), and Risk Assessments tailored to site-specific conditions.
  • Regulatory Oversight & Compliance Management:  Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including CERCLA, RCRA, and other applicable environmental laws. Lead regulatory negotiations, prepare high-level reports for regulatory agencies, and manage the permit and approval processes for complex remediation projects.
  • Business Development & Client Growth:   Build and nurture strong relationships with potential clients, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders to expand the company's client base. Lead proposal development, including writing technical sections, cost estimates, and coordinating multidisciplinary teams to submit competitive bids for new projects. Assist senior leadership in developing strategies for market expansion, identifying emerging trends, and fostering long-term partnerships to support business growth.
  • Client & Stakeholder Management:
Serve as the primary technical and strategic contact for clients, maintaining and building relationships with key stakeholders. Regularly provide high-level project updates, address technical challenges, and guide clients through decision-making processes. E
