Epoch AI is seeking a Senior Researcher to inform us and our stakeholders about key trends in machine learning. The role will involve investigating key trends in AI development, rigorously analyzing them, then presenting them as succinct data insights on our website.

Epoch AI is already producing some of the best research and data worldwide for understanding the future and impact of AI. We are looking for a Senior Researcher for our data insights to help us deepen this understanding and conduct rigorous and actionable analysis about trends and developments in the field, and share our findings with AI researchers, policymakers, and the world. You will work closely with our data team to improve and expand our data insights and provide data-based answers to the strategic questions of our stakeholders.

This role is fully remote, with a preference for candidates whose working hours overlap with UTC and UTC-8, and we are able to hire in many countries.

As a Senior Researcher, your main responsibilities will include:

• Identifying key AI trends and implications of AI development for different industries and stakeholders, to prioritize among possible data insights.
• Conducting rigorous research and data analysis to produce reliable and actionable data insights and reports.
• Engaging and consulting with clients and collaborators to identify their strategic questions and deliver tailored data-backed reports and analysis.
• Improving and expanding our data insights in their positioning, presentation, and writing.
• Reviewing and giving feedback on the work and data insights of colleagues at Epoch.
• Optionally: managing junior analysts and researchers, overseeing their work. This role is primarily about data analysis, but for interested candidates there is the opportunity to become a manager.
  
  

What we are looking for

Requirements:

• Advanced skills in data analysis and statistical modelling. For example, you should be familiar with hierarchical modelling, and have opinions on when and how to use it. You should have experience addressing open-ended analysis problems with limited data, recognising appropriate methods and their trade-offs.
• Deep familiarity with AI and ML research and the latest developments and trends in the field.
• Excellent written communication skills, capable of clearly articulating analytical findings to both a technical and a broad audience, crafting insightful reports, and producing concise, compelling data insights.
• Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, able to effectively engage clients and stakeholders, understand their needs, and build trust.
• Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to analytical rigor.
  
  

Nice to have:

• Experience with data visualization. 
• Direct research experience in machine learning and AI, including published papers. 
• Familiarity with machine learning hardware or experience with large-scale training runs.
• Familiarity with Epoch AI’s mission and our research on the trajectory of AI.

• Annual salary between $150,000–$200,000 USD. 
• Salaries are not restricted to USD, and contracts and payments are usually in local currencies. Conversions are based on one-year average exchange rates.
