Under supervision of a Crew Supervisor, Plumbers and Steamfitters, or other supervisor in a state department, institution, or agency, does varied types of plumbing work involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, and systems; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- Inspects broken water, drainage, waste, and gas lines, defective closet bowls, wash basins and urinals, malfunctioning radiators, refrigerators, laundry machines, and other types of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances, and machinery; ascertains the nature of the needed emergency or permanent repairs; and does whatever repair work is necessary.
- Covers piping and fittings with insulation or other compositions.
- Installs toilets, showers, heating units, and other types of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances, and machinery, and installs and maintains pumps.
- Maintains water, drainage, waste, and gas lines in good working order, and makes emergency plumbing and steamfitting repairs.
- Removes stoppage from waste pipes, water closets, soil stacks, and house drains, and prevents water wastage by repairing and/or replacing worn plumbing and steamfitting parts.
- Installs and maintains mains, rises, headers, radiators, and auxiliary equipment for heating systems.
- Installs, repairs, and/or maintains water, gas, oil, waste disposal, and high-pressure steam pipes and facilities; installs, repairs, and maintains furnaces and boilers, steamtables, autoclaves, and similar equipment; works with wrought iron, cast iron, butt welded, soil, asbestos, composition, and copper pipe; installs and repairs piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell and spigot, compression, and soldered joints. Is familiar with the nomenclature, use, and installation of reducing pressure, relief, surge, check, float, gate, globe, and thermostatically controlled valves, unions, sleeves, bushings, reducers, steam traps, dirt strainers, and other fittings.
- Interprets data from the stationary firemen's and/or engineer's log.
- Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, specifications, and roughing-in sheets in accord with the plumbing code or approved trade practices.
- Interprets graphic symbols used on piping drawings.
- Inspects and tests work in progress and completed work.
- Keeps simple records of work done, materials used, and time spent.
- In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire training classes.
- Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of broad experience in work involving the installation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings appliances, machinery, and plumbing systems.
LICENSE: Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the problems involved in installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining water, drainage, waste, and gas lines, radiators, refrigerators, laundry equipment, closet bowls, wash basins, urinals, showers, bathtubs, and other types of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances, and machinery.
- Knowledge of the competent and safe operation of pipe cutters, caps and dies, pipe threaders, soldering tools, varied types of wrenches, saws, gauges, and valves, and other special tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Knowledge of the particular problems involved in using lead, cast iron, soil, terra cotta, and other types of pipes. Ability to analyze problems involving plumbing and steamfitting work, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
- Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions and assignments.
- Ability to install, inspect, repair, and maintain varied types of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances, and machinery under varying circumstances.
- Ability to properly use pipe cutters, caps and dies, pipe threaders, soldering tools, wrenches, saws, gauges, valves, and other special tools and equipment.
