Senior Summer Camp Counselor - Zoo

The Senior Counselor is responsible for direct supervision of campers and for conducting daily camp activities, including arts and crafts, games, music, nature activities, and tours of Zoo exhibits. These positions involve direct interactions with children ages 5-14 and interactions with other Zoo division personnel.

1. Supervises educational program participants, ensuring a safe and positive program experience.
2. Conducts program activities, i.e. arts, crafts, games, music programs, nature activities, tours of Zoo, etc.
3. Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
4. Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
5. Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.

Qualifications

• Must possess or have completing coursework towards at a minimum an associate degree from an accredited college or university in education, biology, zoology, natural sciences, performing arts, or a related field.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Previous experience in camp, zoo, aquarium, or nature center education preferred. 
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
• Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
• Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
• Ability to work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Available to work up to 40 hours per week (anytime between 7:30am-6:00pm), Typical is 8:00am-4:30pm M-F
• Possess or be working towards a degree in education, biology, zoology, natural sciences, performing arts, or other related fields
• Previous experience in camp, zoo, aquarium, or nature center education preferred.
• Must be willing to be fingerprinted, drug screened, and to secure three written references attesting to the suitability of the individual to work with children.
•  Personable and outgoing, work efficiently and in an organized manner.
•  Effective/strong communication skills.
• Must be available May 26 through August 7.

Work Schedule: Must be available to work Monday- Friday anytime between 7:30am-6:00pm.   Application Deadline: Open until filled.
