About the role

The Clinical Assistant - CMA delivers nursing care for patients across their life span, and through the use of the nursing process, assesses and documents the effects of care under the supervision of a Clinic Coordinator works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, medical and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice.

Knowledge of hospital and department Mission, Vision and Values as well as policies and procedures, patient care procedures and the ability to operate technical equipment as acquired through orientation. The Medial Assistant, working in a staff nurse position, utilizes the nursing process to deliver nursing care to an individual or group of patients and accepts assigned responsibilities as an accountable member of the health care team.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program, LPN or RN.

Certifications: Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association is required. Active Medical Assistant School certification, LPN or RN registration is also required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Education (performance of these duties include but are not limited to)

  • Encourages participation and shares responsibility for providing information related to prevention, maintenance and restoration of health.
  • Participates in patient education; appropriately utilizes resources/adjusts to meet the patient's needs based on their level of understanding.
  • Evaluates and documents patient's and/or significant other's response to education given.
  • Screens and documents patient learning needs, abilities, preferences and desire and motivation to learn.
  • Documents teaching programs and referrals in patient's chart.
  • Considers patient cultural and religious practices, emotional barriers, physical and cognitive limitations and language when planning educational interventions and documents findings on educational record.

Safety (performance of these duties include but are not limited to)

  • Monitors emergency equipment and maintains documentation; reports problems immediately.
  • Routinely maintains a safe and clean patient care work area to promote patient and visitor satisfaction.
  • Utilizes appropriate measures when assisting and transporting patients.
  • Effectively responds to crisis situations.
  • Follows infection control principles to ensure a safe environment.

Appointment Scheduling (performance of these duties include but are not limited to)

  • Schedules all appointments, procedures and tests that DO NOT require a referral or authorization number

Clinic Responsibilities (performance of these duties include but are not limited to)

  • Clean and stock exam rooms on a daily basis; report supply needs to the Supervisor.
  • Verify all supplies out of date medications are appropriately discarded.
  • Identifies and makes constructive suggestions and or contributes to opportunities for improvement.
  • Communicates with Team Leader the need for staffing assistance, administrative needs and human resource issues.
  • Organizes work load and assists other staff members as needed.
  • Responsible for follow up of the medication prescription message line.

Other Assigned Duties (performance of these duties include but are not limited to)

  • Takes on 'additional duties' job assignments to help department complete tasks not identified in a specific job/position.
  • Performs other assigned duties to the satisfaction of the supervisor

Patient Assessment (performance of these duties include but are not limited to)

  • Escorts patient to exam room and documents vitals, chief complaint, medication and allergies in patient chart.
  • Review forms completed by patient are complete and fully answered by the patient.
  • Accurately and timely completes the assessment form to include pertinent biophysical, psychosocial and educational information.
  • Prepares exam room for patient and provider and acts as a chaperone when necessary
  • Evaluates patient's status and make appropriate recommendations to the physician; documents in patient's chart
  • Communicates accurate information to patient and/or their significant to other, regarding care plan and/or procedures
  • Documents changes in patient condition from the initial assessment.
  • Accurately and legibly documents using, appropriate signatures, titles, error corrections, etc.
  • Evaluates and documents patients responses to all interventions and procedures carried out both on a physical and psychological basis.
