Visual Arts Team Lead - Localization (Webcomics Typesetting)

Tapas Entertainment is seeking a Visual Arts Team Lead (Webcomics Typesetting) based in California with the ability to travel to the El Segundo office space on a semi-regular basis transitioning to hybrid, in the office several days per week. Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Localization, this individual will manage letter dialogue, sound effects, and all English translated scripts on multiple projects, bringing them through production and ensuring that all projects are prepared on-schedule for digital distribution.

Responsibilities:

• Manage assignments outsourced to vendors/freelancers who produce localized versions of foreign language comics using Photoshop
• Train the typesetting team on the Tapas production process, including how to use Photoshop for an efficient typesetting workflow and upload comics episodes using our custom Content Management System tool
• Ensure an optimized production pipeline in cooperation with our Translation and Quality Control Leads through clear and timely communication in meetings, 1:1s, and through our project management tools
• Troubleshoot typesetting issues and implement solutions in collaboration with the technology team
• Review assignments and tests for typesetting quality
• Continuously assess and improve the typesetting process to increase efficiency and reduce errors
• Upload and maintain an organized archive of all typeset comics and assets (JPG, PSD files)
• Tackle special projects as needed and pitch in with general management duties

Qualifications:

• Minimum 5+ years of typesetting/design experience, with a high proficiency in Photoshop
• Minimum 1 year of people management experience, ideally leading and mentoring a large team of freelancers
• Technical leadership with an eye towards comics aesthetics and accuracy
• Commitment to building positive work culture and fostering collaboration
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, balancing the needs of multiple concurrent projects on tight schedules
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to articulately present to stakeholders outside the team and organization
• Competence in CMS and digital platforms such as Slack and Dropbox directly related to publishing workflows and content lifecycle management
• Strict adherence to deadlines, advance planning to efficiently allocate resources
• A passion for webcomics is a big plus, as is a love for our storytelling community
