Job Description

Position Overview

The Ultrasound Technologist, also classified as a Medical Instrument Technician, independently performs complex diagnostic ultrasound examinations, prepares and positions patients, captures and documents images, and supports radiology operations in accordance with VALBHS policies, procedures, and medical staff protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for ultrasound procedures, explain exams, obtain relevant medical history, and position patients safely and comfortably.
  • Operate ultrasound equipment independently to perform complex diagnostic exams and capture high-quality images.
  • Select technical parameters, apply coupling gel, maneuver transducers, and adjust accessory equipment as needed.
  • Document, label, archive, and send images to PACS; complete post-processing, case editing, and required reporting.
  • Enter and maintain patient information in Radiology Vista, CPRS, and related systems.
  • Set up exam rooms, verify supplies and equipment, and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Collaborate with radiologists, physicians, and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to support accurate diagnosis.
  • Follow VALBHS policies, OSHA guidelines, health and safety requirements, and required compliance training.
  • Maintain professional appearance, computer proficiency, and readiness to support additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of current work experience in medical sonography.
  • Associate’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography or related field, or bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification.
  • Must meet Medical Instrument Technician requirements and VALBHS credentialing and privileging standards.
  • Proficiency with Radiology Vista, CPRS, imaging technology, and general office systems.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Card holder required.
  • Must pass or possess VA Public Trust Clearance.
  • Must meet pre-assignment medical exam, immunization, OSHA, and onboarding/compliance requirements.
  • Resume required for final submission.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ARDMS certification preferred but not required.
  • PACS experience preferred; AGFA PACS training may be provided.
  • VA, federal healthcare, hospital, or radiology service experience helpful.
