About the role

The Special Assistant to the Dean for the Law School and Affiliate Faculty in Human Rights (SADAF) will report to the Dean with a dotted reporting line to the Associate Dean for Clinics, Centers, and Public Service. This position will have a unique opportunity to (i) enhance the Jesuit presence at LMU Loyola Law School, (ii) support service-learning among students and other mission-based programming for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and (iii) make a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge and global engagement in the area of human rights.

Support the Dean, Director of the Office of Student Life, and/or the Law School Chaplain in engaging with Catholic and Jesuit networks and strengthening interfaith collaborations that support diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education, with the goals of helping students navigate dialogue across difference and strengthening community members’ experiences of belonging and wellness.

Assist the Dean in identifying opportunities for increasing collaboration with LMU’s Office of Mission and Ministry to support mission-related goals, such as increasing access to legal education, promoting social justice and expanding global impact, and enhancing educational programming.

Assist with the development of programming for faculty, students, and staff showing how Jesuit pedagogy can enhance teaching and learning practices in legal education. In particular, SADAF will support the ADF, Associate Dean for Student Services (ADSS), and other faculty partners, in the enhancement of programming that supports professional identity formation and whole person care.

Assist the Dean with communications describing efforts or programming identified in 1-3 above.

Serve on appropriate Law School and University-wide committees, as assigned.

Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Affiliate Faculty of Human Rights
 

In consultation with the Associate Dean for Faculty (ADF) and the Associate Dean for Clinics, Centers, and Public Service (ADC), SADAF will teach (or co-teach) one or two law school courses over the course of the year. It is contemplated that at least one course will be in the area of human rights law. For the first year, SADAF will teach a human rights course in collaboration with and at the direction of the Director of the Loyola Center for Human Rights.

As Affiliate Faculty of Human Rights, SADAF will identify opportunities to support mission-based curricular, co-curricular, or extracurricular programming or projects that advance human rights and strengthen our global partnerships and engagement.  Special consideration will be given to projects identified as a priority by the respective faculty directors of the Loyola Center for Human Rights, the Loyola Atrocities Clinic, or the Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic. Before moving forward with such programming or projects, SADAF must consult and get approval from the appropriate center/clinic director(s), as well as the ADF and ADC, to ensure mission-alignment, sufficient resources, and compliance with all applicable university, law school, and clinic or center-specific policies and procedures.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Familiarity with diverse communities around Los Angeles County and globally.
  • Proven experience working with legal organizations and non-governmental organizations in the area of human rights.
  • Juris Doctor and ten years legal experience;  
  • Preferred Master’s Degree or higher in human rights law or another related field. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships within the LMU and Loyola Law School communities, as well as with external partners locally, nationally, and globally.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with diverse populations in a multicultural environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in the context of interpersonal and group relations required.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and complete them in a timely fashion required.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of MS Word, Excel, on-line survey software, and web page publisher systems.

Salary range

$84,800.00 - $114,500.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
