JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The College of Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory seeks to fill a part-time laboratory assistant position beginning in April or May. This is a great opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain valuable experience.
The Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory (AASL) provides analytical testing and research-based recommendations to support sustainable resource management decisions. The lab offers comprehensive analyses of soil, water, plant tissue, manure, compost, and other agricultural materials.
This position primarily assists with receiving, sorting, and preparation of sample materials including plant, soil, manure, biosolids, and compost for analysis. Preparation includes drying, grinding, uniform mixing, and subsampling. Additional tasks include performance of routine procedures such as filtration using gravitational and vacuum extraction, quantitative transfer and bringing samples to volume in volumetric containers, precise weighing, and cleaning, and the operation of analytical pipettes, balances, pH and ion specific electrodes, drying ovens, and muffle furnaces. This position also assists with data collection using the Laboratory Information Management System. All tasks will be performed as specified in the standard operating procedures manual.
Preference will be given to current undergraduate students in the Penn State College of Agriculture. Previous laboratory experience is preferred, but not required. Please submit current resume and a brief cover letter summarizing relevant training and experience.
