This position provides or makes available spiritual, religious, and emotional resources for patients and their families during the patient's hospitalization. Provides spiritual and emotional support for the hospital staff and serves as an educational resource for staff. Provides on-call coverage as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Ordination and/or endorsement with a faith community, and in good standing

2. Master’s degree in Divinity, Religious Studies, or an equivalent graduate-level degree, as recognized by a professional chaplaincy certifying body.

3. Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education

4. Board Certified Chaplain or must obtain within three (3) years of hire

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

1. Two (2) years of healthcare chaplaincy experience

1. Makes spiritual care visits to patients, their families, and hospital staff on a regular and consistent basis to enable them to utilize, discover, or develop their spiritual resources in times of crises.
2. Interacts consistently in a warm manner that effectively invites others into pastoral relationships.
3. Functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary teams of one's assigned areas.
4. Provides effective, competent, informed spiritual support for: organ donation, ethical dilemmas, discontinuation of life support and palliative care, as well as trauma and medical/surgical patients.
5. Serves as an educational resource in the area of spirituality, grief, compassion fatigue and resilience, and ethical decision making for hospital staff and community.
6. Provides spiritual resources that are appropriate in light of the other's tradition, including reading material, provision for ceremonies and rituals, and arranging of visits by faith representatives from the community when specifically requested.
7. Documents in the patient record and in departmental records. Communicates relevant patient information with the Spiritual Care team and interdisciplinary team members.
8. Maintains a consistent accountability for spiritual care activities with Spiritual Care team members and Department Director.
9. May participate as a Spiritual Care team member in the on-call pager rotation that provides 24-hour availability of spiritual care.
10. Completes administrative duties and serves on hospital committees as assigned.
11. Serves as a clinical mentor for students and as an educational resource for ACPE programs.
12. Develops wellness initiatives and opportunities for hospital staff.
13. Initiates personal and professional development related to spiritual care functions and responsibilities.
14. Adheres to the Common Code of Ethics for Chaplains, Pastoral Counselors, Pastoral Educators, and Students.
