Works under the direction of the Manager of Technical Services serving as a key resource in the histology area of the laboratory. Maintains a high level of expertise in histology, while contributing to the overall laboratory through their work at the technical bench as defined in the essential functions of the Histotechnologist job description. Takes a role in the assessment and ongoing use of the instruments and procedures in their section, new product evaluation, and development of new procedures. The Serves as a resource for accreditation preparations.

Job Type: Full Time, 80 hours every two weeks

Education Requirements:

-Bachelors in Histotechnology or related field

- Histotechnologist Certification ASCP (C-HTL)

PROCEDURES AND PROCESSES

• In addition to the essential functions required as a histotechnologist, also demonstrates a strong understanding of overall laboratory processes and procedures with special attention to the following components of the analytical process in the histology section:
• Procedure manual accuracy and functionality, preventive maintenance, quality control, new test evaluation, troubleshooting, training, procedure implementation, competency evaluation, supplies and reagents.

WORKFLOW

• Helps identify best practices for the organization of workload to achieve optimum turnaround times.
• Performs and documents instrument maintenance.
• Reviews maintenance and problems logs and follows up with any necessary corrective actions.
• Documents review and any actions taken.
• Implements new tests.
• Demonstrates knowledge and leadership in the areas of sample identification and labeling, preparation for gross examination, preparation of fresh frozen sections, tissue embedding, cutting, staining and storage.

DOCUMENTATION

• Follows specified policies and procedures for the accessioning of pathology specimens into the laboratory information system, sample identification, and workload activities.

USE OF RESOURCES

• Coaches and mentors laboratory staff in the delivery of quality histopathology services.
• Meets established expectations for productivity and workload.
• Maintains technical competence through ongoing participation in training and education opportunities.
• Maintains competence in the preparation and use of both routine and special stains and histochemical procedures.
• Maintains competence in the routine use, care and maintenance of instrumentation within the histotechnology area of the laboratory.
• Serves as a key resource for both internal and external customers of the laboratory.
• Actively develops and promotes safe work practices throughout the laboratory with special attention to the area of histology.
• Serves as a resource for the accreditation preparations in the histology section.
• May periodically be on call to allow continuity of laboratory services as necessary.
• Serves as a key resource to co-workers with respect to the laboratory information system.
• Also serves as a liaison between the department systems specialist and the histotechnologists.

QUALITY MANAGEMENT

• Participates in all required QC and QA activities appropriate for the services provided.
• Works closely with Pathologists and other Histotechnologists on the development, performance, and monitoring of sample preparation and staining quality control activities.
• Reviews Quality Control logs and follows up with any necessary corrective actions.
• Documents review and any actions taken.
• Maintains knowledge of external regulatory requirements specific to histology and communicates necessary changes to meet those requirements.
• Identifies and offers suggestions for process improvement opportunities.
• Demonstrates the ability to analyze processes and assure quality.
