POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for leadership of fitness classes using techniques suggested and approved by the Y USA. The instructor is also responsible for the safety and overall satisfaction of participants.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Program
a. Conduct classes in a manner approved by the Y USA.
b. Stay up to date on new techniques and exercises.
c. Modify classes regularly to ensure continued interest.
d. Be aware of injury prevention and recognition through proper exercise to ensure safety of participants.
e. Incorporate YMCA values in classes through presentation of materials, attitude and discussion topics.
2. Facility
a. Notify Supervisor of any equipment malfunctions or repairs immediately.
b. Ensure stereo, music, mic, and all class equipment is returned to appropriate storage area after classes.
c. Ensure cleanliness of program/class area by sweeping floor before class, if needed.
3. Public Relations
a. Conduct classes in a manner that typifies the SSYMCA philosophy. All leaders should be enthusiastic and outgoing in presentation of class material.
b. Provide support and encouragement for all participants, regardless of fitness level.
c. Promote other YMCA programs during classes when applicable.
d. Seek feedback from participants on program to ensure their needs are being met.

4. Association
a. Obtain additional knowledge through attendance at workshops, observation of other leaders, and individual study.
b. Dress according to SSYMCA Policy.
c. Attend all department and branch staff meetings as scheduled by Supervisor.
d. Assist with other association projects and programs as needed.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
• At least 1 year of experience as a class leader or instructor, or equivalent and relevant certifications based on specialty class being offered preferred.
• National certification (i.e. ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness preferred. It is the instructor’s monetary responsibility to maintain those certifications.
• Instructor should demonstrate people skills to be able to work well with members, coworkers and supervisors.
• Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
• High school education or equivalent preferred.
Upon hire:
• Current Y approved Child & Infant and Adult CPR, AED and First Aid must be obtained within 30-days of hire and be current throughout length of employment.
• South Sound YMCA’s - New Employee Orientation must be obtained within 45-days of hire.
• Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• Group Exercise at the Y must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
• Foundations of Emotional Intelligence: Self-Awareness must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
