The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

The Global Payroll Director will be responsible for overseeing the global payroll operations, developing, and implementing strategic payroll initiatives, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. This role requires a visionary leader with the ability to manage complex, multi-faceted payroll processes and drive continuous improvement across the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement global payroll strategies in collaboration with senior leadership, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Operational Oversight: Oversee global payroll operations to ensure accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. Make strategic decisions requiring in-depth analysis of unique and multi-faceted concepts.
  • Project and Budget Management: Initiate and approve projects to improve payroll efficiency and competitiveness. Establish and manage departmental budgets, approving programs and budget deviations.
  • Vendor and Compliance Management: Manage contracts and contract renewals, ensuring payroll vendor contractual obligations are met. Ensure payroll processes and resources comply with SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) controls and other regulatory requirements.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Manage and mentor a team of payroll professionals, including senior managers. Provide direct supervision, set objectives, conduct performance reviews, and identify training and development needs.
  • Issue Resolution and Support: Act as the point of escalation for regional payroll vendors. Resolve escalated program issues, ensuring programs meet business objectives on time and within budget. Support Country Managers with timely policy decisions and approvals.
  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the payroll team. Work with payroll vendors on improvements identified during payroll audits.
  • Employee Performance and Development: Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the payroll team. Implement performance management processes to set objectives, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance reviews. Identify training and development needs for team members and provide opportunities for skill enhancement and career growth. Mentor and coach team members to build a high-performing and motivated payroll team. Recognize and reward outstanding performance and contributions.

Your Skills and Expertise 
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Ten (10+) years’ experience in global payroll management in a private public, government or military environment
  • Eight (8+) years’ experience in a leadership role

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and resources effectively
  • Experience with payroll systems and software
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of industry trends and best practices in payroll management
  • Familiarity with SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) controls and compliance requirements

Work location: Hybrid

  • Work Your Way Eligible (Employee will hybrid in office and home)
  • The office is in Maplewood, MN, you will be required to come into the office 3 times a week.

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic
