Job Description

Under general supervision, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, performs diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures in one or more specialties of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) on all age groups for outpatient, inpatient and emergency/trauma patients. 

1. Performs diagnostic imaging procedures in one (1) or more specialties including but not limited to obstetrical, gynecological, abdominal, vascular work, small parts, musculoskeletal, neuro-sonography and neonatal  
2. Performs portable scans and assists in procedures  
3. Operates a variety of diagnostic ultrasound equipment and monitors and maintains medical equipment  
4. Assesses general patient condition  
5. Documents procedures and events in the patient’s medical record and departmental logs, in accordance with regulatory, hospital and departmental standards  
6. Recognizes and documents pathology; reviews pertinent history in patient’s chart  
7. Transports patients using gurneys, wheelchairs and beds  
8. Schedules procedures and patients; answers departmental telephones; may be assigned to coordinate patient flow  
9. Trains medical and technical personnel such as radiology residents and students in ultrasound  
10. Participates in departmental Quality Improvement efforts 

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs other related duties as required. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

• Level I: 
  • License and Certification: 
    • Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in one (1) specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; AND 
    • Must obtain a valid certification and registration with the ARDMS in a second specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health within six (6) months of appointment.
