Description of Duties: The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a part-time adjunct faculty position to teach SUS 332 (Nature Writing and Photography) for the Spring 2026 semester. Candidates in the areas of communications, humanities or journalism are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidates will have a strong commitment to teaching, and will teach classes at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, as well as mentor students. 

Special Notes: This is a non-tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences: The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) is the State University of New York's center for marine and atmospheric research, education, and public service. It is also the home of the university’s Sustainability Studies Program.  Approximately 800 graduate and undergraduate students currently work and study at SoMAS. The SoMAS Faculty are internationally known for their leadership in research in atmospheric sciences, all the major disciplines of oceanography – biological, chemical, geological, and physical – and sustainability studies. http://www.somas.stonybrook.edu  

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a relevant field for outdoor and / or nature writing and publication.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching undergraduate courses in nature writing. Experience in course and curriculum development. Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students. Expertise in the field of nature and / or outdoor writing and experience leading students on trips in marine and / or terrestrial environments. Experience publishing.
