Position Summary
Under the direction of the Sr. Vice President, MSI, and CMO is responsible for providing medical direction to assigned areas and for acting as a leader and mentor to Associate Medical Directors. The Medical Director is a seasoned physician.

Responsibilities
- Serves as medical and/or scientific director for Versiti Blood Operations, Diagnostic Laboratory or Applied Research Laboratory.
- Provides medical direction for area of transfusion medicine as needed.
- Consults with regional and out-of-region physicians regarding issues of laboratory testing, laboratory medicine and/or transfusion medicine.
- Participates in clinical and/or applied research at Versiti and publishes in peer reviewed journals.
- Fosters education of medical and lay people through leading Versiti educational responsibilities and activities.
- Together with other Versiti physicians, provides medical direction to Therapeutic Services, Blood Services, and CCBD (Comprehensive Center for Bleeding Disorders).
- Maintains a high level of professional expertise in transfusion medicine, hematology, and other areas of medical expertise.
- Serves on and/or chairs regional and national committees.
- Serves as an expert medical resource due to high level of expertise and experience; shares knowledge with and teaches others whenever the opportunity presents itself and actively seeks out opportunities to impart knowledge.
- Provides leadership and serves as a mentor to Medical Directors and Associate Medical Directors; shares knowledge, skills, information and perspective to foster their personal and professional learning and growth.
- Assists with recruitment of physicians and fellows to fill positions when indicated.
- Assists with training new Medical Directors and Associates.
- Provides input into performance appraisal for Medical Directors and Associates.
- Provides broad level of medical consultation to the organization as needed to address issues.
- Leads and/or participates in academic programs of the Medical College of Wisconsin and other academic institutions as needed.
- Upholds the customer service standards, confidentiality and management philosophy of Versiti.
- Participates in continuous improvement projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Education
- M.D. or D.O. Degree required
Experience
- A minimum of 15 years’ experience in transfusion medicine, hematology, or related field required
- Scientific, medical, and/or management positions of increasing responsibility during career in medicine, research or academic medicine with focus in transfusion medicine and hematology required
- Successful track record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific publications and/or contributions to books required
- Demonstrated success in serving as an active contributor to clinical research programs required
- Participation in peer review of manuscripts and grants required
- Demonstrated capacity for leadership as evidenced by serving on, organizing and/or leading scientific program committees for scientific conferences, editorial boards of journals, administrative and executive committees of national and international societies, or other equivalent activities required
- National reputation as an authority in transfusion medicine and hematology required
