Position Overview
This role is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly motivated global team of Database Engineers, working on critical projects across multiple database systems. The Senior Database Engineer will play a critical role in filling a gap between Database Operations and Development Teams. While tuning and monitoring performance of our extensive database stack will be the primary focus of this role, there will be many opportunities to extend one’s skills into other areas. Extensive training and growth opportunities will be provided, but the candidate should be able to demonstrate high level of competency in SQL and knowledge of inner workings of various database server components. We are ideally looking for a candidate who is willing to learn and grow in a highly supportive team work environment. Currently the team consists of 10 members in various geographical regions looking after SQL Server, MySQL/MariaDB, Cassandra and Couchbase both on-premise and in the cloud.
Key Responsibilities
- Performance tune SQL queries using industry standard monitoring solutions
- Offer expertise and guidance on code optimization
- Troubleshoot database Server issues and performance bottlenecks
- Produce clear documentation for delivered solutions
- Work closely with Development teams (and be their point of contract for performance related enquiries)
- Contribute to and maintain system standards
- Research and recommend innovative, and where applicable automate approaches for system administrations tasks
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs
- Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communication with impacted stakeholders.
- Perform on-going performance tuning, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required
Essential skills:
- Proficiency in query tuning using T-SQL
- Be able to understand and discuss query plans
- Good understanding of performance tuning best practices
- Good understanding of inner workings of SQL Server engine
- AWS or Azure cloud experience
Optional:
- Experience with at least one of the following Database Management Systems:
- MariaDB/MySQL
- Cassandra
- Couchbase
- Automations and scripting (PowerShell, Python or any other)
- Data Warehouse (either reporting or ETL side)
