About the role

Under broad administrative direction, the Director of Hospital Medicine Advanced Practice Providers (APP) provides direction and expertise in planning, execution, and monitoring of programs, processes, and systems for APPs working in all Hospital Medicine clinical locations. This includes the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and systems related to strategic planning, program development, operations, and workforce planning, as well as other initiatives to enhance the APP program and workforce. This role collaborates with organizational leadership and staff to develop, analyze and assist with implementation of innovative care models utilizing APPs in a fiscally, operationally and professionally responsible manner.  This role reports to the Associate Chief of Hospitalist and General Internal Medicine, Hospitalist Director.   The Director of Hospital Medicine APP will work dynamically and collaboratively with leadership from administration, clinical operations, finance, practice plan, human resources, provider services, quality, clinical departments, APPs and physicians to evaluate, create, implement and monitor programs related to APPs. This position uses critical thinking skills to address opportunities for programmatic development and improvement while promoting engagement of stakeholders across multiple disciplines and departments.  Demonstrates personal leadership through activities at the strategic and operational level, through innovative contributions to quality efforts and through the selection and development of quality and results oriented staff; and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


1. As part of the department leadership team, designs and directs clinical services to meet program goals and achieve quality, cost and volume objectives.

a. Develops objectives, goals, and strategies, and aligns resources collaboratively with key cross functional teams and stakeholders. Incorporates the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Medicine, strategic plan and department initiatives in developing and delivering on key performance indicators and monitoring progress. 
b. Collaborates with SOM leadership, finance, operations, and clinical department leadership to develop a system of ongoing review and monitoring of APP financials including cost, productivity and utilization.
c. Leads and develops staff in program and project management activities.  Leads team through downstream effects of change on the full value stream and aligns team’s goals with organizational priorities.
d. Directs the design and development of clinical services which are responsive to customer requirements, reflect the input and participation of staff and maximize productivity and effectiveness of work processes.


2. Develops, directs, reviews, and optimizes operational and financial initiatives and analytics related to workforce planning, utilization, and recruitment and retention of APPs in collaboration with Human Resources, APP leaders, operational leaders, clinical leaders, and hiring departments.


3. Works collaboratively with key stakeholders, manages and provides oversight for processes, presentations, monitoring, and evaluation of Faculty and APP providers.

4. Creates management systems which assure the achievement of goals, promote the performance, development and retention of staff, and are responsive to needs for change.
a. Supports participation of staff and managers in service quality improvement teams and projects.
b. Creates an environment which is customer focused, supports staff participation in process improvement, and empowers staff to make decisions to improve patient care.
c. Assures that staff have the training, time and resources needed to participate in service quality improvement activities.


5. Collaborates with clinical quality leadership to improve clinical utilization and create systems and processes which improve clinical outcomes.


6. Monitors patient and stakeholder satisfaction and directs services to respond to requirements and improve satisfaction.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant Training Program approved by the Board of Physician Quality Assurance is required
  • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) required
  • Licensure by Maryland State Board of Physicians as a Physician’s Assistant is required
  • 6 years’ experience as a Physician's Assistant is required
  • 3 years' management experience is required
  • Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient pop
