Senior Engineer - Project Manager

This position supports Engineering’s mission to drive innovation and new product development at Mayo Clinic, with a unique opportunity to help define the next generation of tools and technologies that enable us to deliver better care for our patients. The role contributes to Mayo Clinic’s commitment to transforming healthcare and improving patient outcomes through innovation and excellence by developing cutting-edge solutions and leveraging emerging technologies.

This position will manage technical product development projects to advance biomedical engineering systems including clinical medical devices, products to enable unique medical research, proof-of-concept prototypes, and other products related to medical care; typical project team size is 2 to 8 engineers and support staff. Collaborate with physicians and researchers; develop User Needs and project priorities; assist with negotiating scope and managing change; communicate status and expectations to project stakeholders: engineering managers, project team, collaborators; provide work direction to project team members. Help prioritize technical tasks in partnership with the project technical lead. Develop and maintain expertise in project and portfolio management and communications tools.  Ensure compliance with the Quality Management System. Develop expertise in safety risk management and regulatory requirements. Lead engineers and staff in a multi-disciplinary development environment, communicate effectively to lead meetings and provide concise project status and future plans.  Develop technical documentation. Oversee continuous improvement efforts.  Skills in communicating and planning are key to this position.

 

BS in Engineering or a related field and 5 years of professional engineering experience; Or MS in Engineering or related field and 3 year of professional engineering experience; Or, PhD in Engineering or related field and 1 year of professional engineering experience. Masters or PhD preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

The most qualified candidate will be an experienced leader with:

• Experience managing technical projects.
• A strong technical background in engineering, with experience in electrical, mechanical, or software development.
• Familiarity with quality management systems and safety risk management.
• Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines.
• Demonstrated leadership in projects involving multi-disciplinary teams
• Expertise in project management methodologies.

Additional Helpful Experience:

• Hands-on experience with Artificial Intelligence tools in product development or project management.
• Background in wearable devices and automation technologies.
• A history of overseeing projects involving software as a medical device (SaMD).
• Proficiency in agile practices and iterative product development.
• Expertise in proof-of-concept prototyping and rapid prototype production.
